maybe the "xmas in July" trend is making its way down under?

I have been discussing linguistics with some of my friends for a few days, and I am back on a kick of watching videos about different dialects. I have to say that this one made me mad.

http://youtu.be/MFfM2GMr3lI

I in no way think people should move to the south and expect them to change the way they talk. I would never move somewhere else and expect them to start speaking like me. That is pompous, and ignorant, due to a great deal of stereotypes. I liked this boy's video.

http://youtu.be/iIJq-T1FbQo

His Appalachian English (yes, that is what it's called) is pretty mild. I know many who would require a translator when speaking to an outsider. Being bilingual (and not by my own choice but because people would judge me), I can provide those services Any the ways, it makes no sense to me. Dialects/Accents differ every where, and I find them beautiful. Those who view it in a negative light are often closed minded and judge people on a class system. I say knock em down a peg or two.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

PS- I have to agree with some of the comments in the second video (don't even bother with the ignorance spewing from the first). Nothing is more annoying than when someone visiting corrects you on how you pronounce the name of your area (You're saying Appalachian wrong) or town. Um... Excuse you! I think I know better, and I think you better get out of my face.

*That and people asking you to repeat things. If they honestly like the way it sounds, fine. If they are laughing at you, different story. I get asked to say "Five" and "Nine" again, along with some other words. In my experience, men love it and women can rot. It's no different from the way some Irish or Scottish say 5 & 9. They all, along with every other country, have different dialects too.

(Pardon. I'm keeping myself in a senate induced rage. I'm ready to defend my culture, if needed.)

Dude —

I'm willing to pay full price for your work, but in return, you can keep your smutty stories to yourself. I think that's more than fair.

Merci, e-Maman! I am trying to be like you if e(ver)-grow up!

These months away have been very therapeutic!

If I had ever heard the term "Melungeon" before, in my life, that would have helped me figure out part of my grandfathers family tree. Still not the part from adoption, but the fact that his mom came from one of the core Melungeon families.

(I miss my papaw so much)
**He had gray/blue eyes so think of the book description of Katniss. Also the same description of some people with olive skin and gray eyes who were Presbyterian, and read english, discovered in NC in the 1700's.

I had just heard word of what the old timers called Gypsies/Travelers. No one called my papaw anything but his name. Anywho, the DNA project is as interesting at the Lumbee (which some believe are the same), though I've only heard of Lumberton Lumbee's. It's a mix of Sub-Sahara African, Euroasian, and European. Some Melungeon have a rare strand of DNA from the Siddis, and some have the same markers as Cherokee.

You learn something new (and pretty cool) every day. I can't help laughing when I read some of the comments as I browse. I had never heard of this, some were not aware that POC's are in the Appalachians. That blew my mind, but I come from an area near several colonies established by free men and women. It's a large area though, and the differences are astounding.

And pardon my ramblings. I have always found the Lumbee project rather interesting and was surprised when I came across this. Really surprised that I had never heard of it, given that it was the App. term, once considered offensive, that has been proudly reclaimed. That seems to be more common in Kentucky and TN.

^ I still don't know if they will ever be able to find out if Lumbees are part of The Lost Colony. Going by the DNA results I would say no. Some say there is little to no Native DNA, but others say some of the markers are close to other NC tribes. The debate continues... I guess.

Mr. Plumber, your appearance is eagerly awaited.

http://geaugadoggy.wordpress.com
They say they will be there between 8 and 5. Like we have nothing better to do that day then to wait around for them. They could at least be hot looking, but they are usually overweight with 3 inches of butt crack showing.

Plumbers crack is whack!

I think some of my teaching friends are starting to calm down slightly, at least for the moment. It has been heartbreaking talking to them and reading their posts. They all love their jobs, and love their students, so much. The idea of no more tenure terrifies them. Couple that with 1 year contracts based on their ability to all their students through standardized testing and they are a wreck. Some who teach at 3rd grade level receive children in their class who can not read, but yet they are cutting 3000 and some teaching assistant jobs in the 3rd-4th grade, and will also be cutting several teaching positions. The salary issue has been hard on them too. It will take 15 years to be increased to $45,000, from 40,000. They also do not get paid during summer breaks. I have to refrain from judgement on that one because I make no where near that and have been doing my job for 10 years, but I understand why they are worried. Many have children to support themselves. It's just sickening, yet the senate gave themselves 14,000 salary increases, each.

You know, he's pretty good about showing up approximately when he says he will, but he sits in the driveway making phone calls for a while. The dogs, of course, go bonkers: what's he doing? What's going on? When can we sniff him?

This time I heard him humming while he worked. It was kind of nice. I prefer to work with people who enjoy what they do, whatever it is.

Regardless, I have water again, and have rejoined the 21st century. I am so glad (And so is everyone I see, since.....pee-yoo.)
