@potato: I had to drop a class because of a group project. I've never known a single group that was equally productive among its members.

Would someone who delivers a harsh message in a sweet voice be considered passive-aggressive? Or who retracts her words and subtly changes her statements when confronted with a direct quote?

Other than a few fun tasks, I despised group projects in school too. I don't know how people do so many these days. I would have ripped my hair out. I really do not know how my nephew held it together during his placement exam for his field of study in med school. He has already completed his 4 years, done 2 in MS and the next step was this exam and specialized study. He prepared for months but his grade depended on how everyone else in his class did. Luckily, he blew the roof off of it, and the rest of the class did pretty good too. He can pick and choose at will. I thought he was going to stroke out waiting for his results, though.

I hope you enjoy it this time around Potatohead. Maybe it will not be as bad as you think!

Speaking of group study and impending doom... Been reading opinion pieces on new math. A retired Berkeley math professor has blasted common core in the journal. She was not impressed that her 6th grandson has to draw his division problems as opposed to giving the answer. If you answer, you get points deducted. It's a group learning experience and one that is supposed to help "at risk students". At risk for what? Needing to go into a field of study that does not involve math? They are not contracting a disease, I hope. Say those who fall into a black hole or suck at it. I was one of them (I found out I had a 6th grade math level when I took my college entrance exam, but I excelled in other areas. One door closes and all that. Luckily I had a wonderful and tiny white headed teacher who I wanted to stuff and put on a shelf. He was adorable, and kind. He helped me climb out of the stellar and into a miniature. I will never come completely down to earth). Anywho, she does not seem to think this will help the mathematically challenged at all. I have 3 friends who are math teachers and I don't think they know what to think. Huge changes, pay keeps getting worse, pressure keeps going up, more parental responsibilities placed on their shoulders and job security is gone.

Aw. That's sad and a little messed up. Lots of boundary stepping.

"My wife and I recently attended a coffee klatch to discuss the Common Core with our state senator. A teacher stood up and said, with a tremble in her voice and a tear in her eye:

"If parents knew what the Common Core is doing to the classroom, there would be a revolt."

What is happening to the classroom as a result of the Common Core? If you would like an answer to this question, spend some time with the English Language Arts (ELA) materials on the New York State Education Department (NYSED) website.

On the engageNY homepage, click on the words "Common Core Curriculum & Assessments." Follow the links until you get to Grade 5 ELA Module 1. Download the 589-page document.

The module is on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This is a fine topic to discuss in school, though the module does confirm worries that the Common Core could be used to promote a political ideology. My critique here is that this module -- despite a disclaimer on the website -- is a script, and scripts suck the oxygen out of a classroom."

I always enjoyed the teachers who included life experiences, exercises of their choosing and made learning fun. One of my favorites, 6th grade, would go into his classroom closet and reappear in drag or costume. (It was the only way he felt comfortable coming out of the closet in the mid 80's). It would always relate to the lesson plan. He might be a woman helping with the war movement or... He kept things lively and fun. Most of all he kept your attention. If he failed to do so, he would smack you on the head with a fly swatter taped to 3 yard sticks. It could reach all the way to the back of the classroom. Stuffy teachers who stuck to books sucked the life out of everything.

ETA: I wonder if the Common Core standards somehow have the ability to mess with continuing education I do at work. I wrote out 4 paragraphs in favor of our instructors methods when I did the class critique. Best instructor we have ever had on communications with the deaf/hearing impaired. He was wonderful and included so many interesting facts BUT had been told by McCluster F**ks office that his instruction would now have to stick to an approved script

Why would people be this stupid? Quickest way to lose momentum as a political party.

One more and then I am done... I am not going to post this link because it's a forever long rant but pretty funny

"Like so many education reform initiatives that seem to arise out of nowhere, the Common Core State Standards is another of these sweeping phantom movements that have gotten their impetus from a cadre of invisible human beings endowed with inordinate power to impose their ideas on everybody.

For example, the idea of collecting intimate personal data on public school students and teachers seems to have arisen spontaneously in the bowels of the National Center for Education Statistics in Washington. It required a small army of education psychologists to put together the data handbooks, which are periodically expanded to include more personal information.

Nobody knows who exactly authorized the creation of such a dossier on every student and teacher in American public schools, but the program exists and is being paid for by the taxpayer. And strange as it may seem, it arose seemingly out of nowhere, like a vampire, to suck the freedom out of the American people."

^ Happened between 66 and 75 but picked up heavily in 82 with TSEM and push for "psychotherapy" in public education and more of need for your information, you know, for the children. All data shows conditions have worsened since. And I am not just talking about global ranking, which I actually find to be pointless test. You can locally see the declines.

"The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

Sounds wonderful. But why do we need it? Why are we re-inventing the wheel? Didn’t our public schools provide a decent education for the “greatest generation” when they were in school? That generation not only learned enough to win World War II but also enough to create the scientific foundation of our high-tech society. The only reason why we need the CCSS is because all of these graduate educationists need something to do to justify their degrees and the salaries that go with them. And of course the new curriculum will cost billions of dollars which will enable these vampires to live in the style to which they’ve become accustomed. By the way, if you object to my referring to these people as vampires, feel free to use your own designations."

Haha.

And this is wild. A very wide range of people actually agree on something

^Not sure what I can do, I was too annoyed at myself to do anything about it! Been too busy today but will see if they're refundable at some point.

Also having trouble with a knitting pattern website - I paid for a download that doesn't seem to want to actually download and they're not responding to my emails. Think I need to give online shopping a break.
Though I do desperately need some mousse.

OMG - things are about to get SO bad at work, i don't know where to start!!!

first off, The Boss was formally sworn-in as a justice of the peace on Monday. i was invited to the family and friends dinner afterward and as i was leaving, he and his wife gave me a beautiful bouquet of white flowers to say thank you for everything i ever did for him. they both said "i miss you" to me, which almost brought me to tears. he said to me that he's not far away (one floor up) and that he'll let me know when he's around so we can visit and that if i need ANYTHING i am to let him know.

*sigh*

i was off for a couple of days at the end of July at the same time as Interim Boss and Reporting Manager. in those 2 days, Evil seems to have decided to wage all out war on Clueless; so much so, that Clueless is ready to file a criminal harassment charge with the police!

Evil has taken to hiding her camera in her desk and if Clueless so much as picks up her cell phone, Evil leans over her cubicle and snaps pictures of her doing it! now, i'm not sure how that fits the definition of harassment in the Cdn Criminal Code - but i do think that Evil is the kind of person who would be capable of doing something reckless that would cause harm to Clueless. so we'll see what will happen there...

the very sad news is that Interim Manager did NOT get the job on a permanent basis!

she has been doing her best to deal with Evil and Clueless and now i've lost my ally with respect to that. i just hope that the successful candidate was either my Reporting Manager or the person who is from the Youth Justice Office (who i don't know). because the other 2 managers are from my region and i can't see myself having a good working relationship with either one. the local one is a micro-manager, and the one from the next court location to the east has been causing us problems with staffing and customer complaints galore!

there is a job i can apply for at another Ministry and i'm going to get everything together and write a bang-up resume to get myself out of this circus! the location is kitty-corner to the Courthouse, so i would still be close by my old boss.

*sigh*

Oh my word

http://www.nj.com/morris/index.ssf/2..._in_class.html

Ethan Chaplin told News 12 that while he was twirling a pencil with a pen cap on in math class, a student who bullied him earlier in the day yelled, "He's making gun motions, send him to juvie."

Michael Chaplin told infowars.com that his son had to undergo a five-hour physical and psychological evaluation.

"The child was stripped, had to give blood samples (which caused him to pass out) and urine samples for of all things drug testing,” Michael Chaplin told the website. “Then four hours later a social worker spoke to him for five minutes and cleared him. Then an actual doctor came in and said the state was 100 percent incorrect in their procedure and this would not get him back in school.”

Personally, I do not care if the kid actually made a hand gesture or not. Name one other place in Nazi Ger... I mean American society where a finger gesture can get you stripped, poked, prodded and forced to do a psych evaluation AND get CPS brought down on your parents.

This is pretty funny

http://gawker.com/5891061/from-rainb...he-last-decade

None are actually Moral Panics. Moral Panics have specific steps starting with concern. That is about as far as most of these go. Concern and/or curiosity. None really reached Hostility: division between them and us. Consensus: Maybe not the majority but at least wide spread acceptance that this is a threat to children/society. Disproportionality: Action taken is disproportionate to the actual threat AND Volatility. That should be self explanatory. Moral Panics have been responsible for many deaths in the past if allowed to escalate. That is why the SP was a MP. Children were interviewed by psychologists (who had no degrees), were striped, physically examined and pushed to admit that they were victims of sexual molestation at the hands of Satanists. Older children in school were kicked out for possibly being on a path to the occult. Several people were arrested over outlandish accusations, etc. The rest is just normal worry or questions and maybe a book deal. A few kids huffed gas when I was in school, news reports were made but no one was harassed for being a potential gas huffer.
