Funny - when I was originally shopping for a candidate, I thought Dean was abrasive! He had this way of kind of "puffing up" when someone questioned him too much...
Kucinich, on the other hand - I've seen and heard him speak many times, mostly on tape and once live, and he only gets worked up when he's doing a speech - a good example of this is a speech titled "Courage, America!" His most famous speech is probably "A Prayer for America" and it is also really moving.
In person he's very soft spoken and also hugs people a lot. He doesn't cuss or resort to personal attacks - I think the harshest thing he's said about Bush was that he lies.(That pretty much says it all, though!)
But then, when pressed by Craig Kilborn, he was able to say a positive thing about the man (he said Bush is very engaging in person.) So....he's got some manners. I've been on his election message board for 7 months now, and not one of them has said "Oh, Dennis is a jerk" or "He's not as friendly as he looks" - in fact it's the other way around, it seems like he's just contagiously nice and he inspires a lot of people.
It's helped me to be on the board with people who know him personally, because I'm sitting here thinking "I'm working my butt off to help this person get elected, who I've only met once for a brief hello, is this person for real or am I getting misled?" And then I speak to people who actually KNOW him and work with him and they're like "No, he's really great." I don't get the "creepy" vibe off of him, and if I was ever going to get it, it would have been when I was standing right next to him at a rally. I didn't get it. He passed my last test at that point.
Dean, I think, let his anger get to him and it just ate him up. I liked his enthusiasm, but I don't think he realised just how DIRTY a Presidential race is...it caught him off guard. Kucinich on the other hand has been chewed up and spat out by the system before, and survived, so he's mellowed.
It's hard to see that from the TV coverage though - esp. Jay Leno, who I think was "put out" that he had to have ALL the candidates on at least once, to meet the equal time requirements. So he does serious interviews with Kerry and Edwards and the others - but he puts Kucinich in a "Dating Game' with Jennifer Tilly. *******.

[ The Great Kerry? GREAT??
Lol, I don't think he's the Great Kerry, but some of his supporters seem to think he is. I'm just tired of Kerry fans hassling those Democrats who aren't on the Kerry bandwagon (not just on this board). Personally, I do plan on voting for Kerry, not because I like him or think he deserves the position, but because it is more important to me to get Bush out of office than to give my vote to the person who really deserves it, Dennis Kucinich.
About your comment on Kucinich - I don't see him as unlikable or abrasive. He's honest and says what he feels, which sets him apart from the crowd. I think he has spirit - he attracts young liberal voters, which Kerry can't seem to do because he just doesn't have the energy. Cleveland does have a strong base of Kucinich supporters - already it is being said that it is large enough to affect Ohio's vote (the city has our largest amount of Democratic voters).
I can't speak for the rest of the country, but Ohioans I know like Kucinich's personality, though they look at him like . Cleveland is different - they have a younger population, more minorities. As you go farther down south, the population gets older and older - with that comes resistance to change. I liken Cinci to many cities in the midwest - they're why a candidate like Kucinich will have a problem getting leeway. Kucinich has popularity, it's just spread out across the country. Hopefully, things will change in time. I know Ohio has made progress in just the past few years.

I don't think he's "The Great Kerry" either but I thought that was hilarious. I consider myself a Kerry supporter but it isn't about Kerry, it's about Bush. If I get angry at any Democrat who won't vote for Kerry in November it's because I consider it a vote for Bush and I HATE Bush. Deep down inside, I'm still an Edwards supporter.
Personally, I think Dean is quite abrasive. My friend and I get into arguments over Dean all the time. She loves him. She even thinks he was hot when he was young. I do not share that opinion.
Dean is still putting his foot in his mouth. He blamed Bush for the attack in Spain. Now, I could make a case for that because I can blame Bush for anything. However, I wouldn't say things like that if I was trying to help someone get elected. For some reason the Bush people attacked Kerry and he had to distance himself from Dean. Even though Kerry didn't say anything. Dean is a loose cannon.
I think Kucinich isn't very telegenic which, fair or not, has been an issue for candidates since 1960.

And yet...since 1960 we really haven't had any "hottie" candidates, so I don't know why it's even an issue. Year in and year out we have mostly wrinkly old guys. I mean, look at this year's crop...it's not like Johnny Depp's running or anything...
the "incumbent" Dubya:
 OH GOD MY EYES!!!!!!
Wesley Clark, who looks like an evil Tommy Smothers:
Howard Dean - love him or hate him, you have to wonder where his neck is at:
John Edwards - granted there are better pics of him out there, but in this one he looks like the Donald. Plus that grin just screams "I'm an ambulance chaser."
Dick Gephardt - eew.
John Kerry, that's a toupee if I ever saw one.
Joe Leiberman, the loose skinned demon from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer":
Then there's the three "Vanity candidates" so called on ABC. Interesting that they're more telegenic than the other "contenders."
Al Sharpton:
Carol Moseley Braun:
Dennis Kucinich:

I think he has a nice smile. It goes all the way to his eyes.

Does anyone else think Kerry (in the pic above) kind of resembles Gomer Pyle?

Telegenic and hot are two different things. Telegenic is more about presence than looks. Take Bill Clinton for example, I think he is so not hot. The red nose, the frizzy hair, the 30 extra pounds. However, the man has presence. He is very telegenic. GW Bush was much more telegenic than his competition. He wouldn't have beaten Bill. Kerry is tall which helps out some. He could be more telegenic but he's against GW so hopefully, it won't be an issue. I know you love Dennis but for me he has zero presence. To me even the evil Dick Gephardt has more presence. I also think Dennis is the second least attractive candidate pictured. Leiberman being the worst looking one. It's not like I think the other 9 are all that. OK, the other 7. I'll admit it, I think Edwards is hot although not in that picture and I think Carol is pretty.
Presence is like sexiness. I can't explain it nor does it have any thing to do with looks. However, they are not necessarily interchangeable. To me Bill is so not sexy but another girl on the board admitted to having a little crush on him.
Honestly, I don't want a hottie president. I don't want to be looking forward to seeing the president in shorty-shorts like thos God awful short Clinton and his thighs used to wear. (visualizing Edwards in shorts - ) I don't know if I could take a president seriously if I'm sitting ther wondering if he is good in bed. I want to cringe at the thought of the President in shorts. It's what I'm used to. Kerry in shorts? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! Thankfully, I can't imagine Kerry owning shorts. I know he windsurfs but I'm convinced he does that in a baggy, long sleeved, webfooted, gloved and hooded wet suit - and goggles Has GW ever been seen in jogging shorts? If he has he must of looked passable because I don't remember seeing him. I only remember men in shorts who look really good or REALLY bad.
PS: To me Kerry's hair looks real it's just to weird looking to have been designed by someone. That's actually a pretty decent picture of JK. Dennis hair looks like toupee dipped in shoe polish. - Sorry, I don't want to be mean because you love him so much but then again you said JE looked like the Donald. :x
PPS: Thank you for pointing out what has been bothering me about Dean's looks. Technically his face isn't bad looking. Now I know that the problem is that it morphs into his neck. Thanks! It really was bothering me.
PPPS: Lieberman looks like he is melting. His forhead is smooth but his chin looks like a shar-pei.

I think Kerry looks like Herman Munster with a dash of Lurch thrown in. I hadn't thought about Gomer Pyle.
I'll admit it, I picked a picture of Gomer Pyle in uniform because Kerry loves to talk about Vietnam and how he served BEFORE MOST OF US WERE BORN. But, I digress...

I don't know how anyone could think Kerry's hair is real. I mean, who would intentionally make their hair look that bad! I bet it's a toupee.

People who live in trailers?
Seriously, how can this look like a toupee:
Three or four toupees maybe but not one.

Three or four...that makes sense. I mean, it doesn't even look like it's attached to his head.

LOL!
I don't think his wife ever calls for him. Look at this picture. Does that look like a loving wife to you? To me it looks like she is trying to get away from him as fast as humanly possible! She looks repulsed and afraid!
I still think Dennis's hair is worse. If not a toupee then a comb over.

I think its funny that I found a much worse picture than yours. Yours is one of the most flattering I've seen. Not sure if that is saying much.

Huh! I thought that Kerry pic I chose was rather scary. It's also an older pic - look how dark his hair was then. I guess he gets scarier looking with age?
Even if he got hair help, he still has melty face.
That's one area in which Dennis has Kerry beat....I know two older women who have crushes on him, and when he gets mobbed at rallies, it's mostly women!!! And there was even a contest to find him a First Lady...

Wow, that's a scary pic of Edwards, the_cheat! He looks like the serial killer on "One Life to Live." I was starting to get over my ick feelings of him, but that brought it all back.
Kucinich looks Ohioan like Bush looks Texan. He reminds me of one of those plant supervisors from the 60's that they show on Ohio History commercials. I can't look at Bush without picturing him wearing one of those tall hats lassoing little dogies or whatever it is they lassoe down there. That's the only job I trust him with!
I don't think Kerry is bad looking. I don't see the Herman Munster/Lurch thing. He reminds me of a Pilgrim or Quaker. Probably because of the New England connection.
IMO, Kucinich and Moseley Braun are the only ones that look intelligent, honest, and reasonably attractive.
