Never had it as a kid

Like Tree13Likes

What's a very common food or drink that you tried for the first time only as an adult?

I never had meatloaf, s'mores or Twinkies until I was an adult.

Not sure if apple dumplings are common or not but I never had those, either, until I was leaving for college.

Didn't try chittlins until adulthood, either.

Pringles.

Late teens, went to a friends cottage an they had them. I still never buy them for the house, but going away, always take a few cans.
I believe in manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick. I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I was such a fussy kid, it was unreal. So basically: ALL THE THINGS (lol). I only really ate plain pasta, cucumber and general fruit and veg.

Until a few years ago, I'd never had:
Onions. Peppers. Tomato sauce (not ketchup, I mean like, pasta sauces). Pie. Salted popcorn. Eggs. Mustard. Porridge. Any gravy that wasn't Bisto (haha). SO many other things, I can't even begin.

Still haven't had mayo or anything mayo-based / with mayo as an ingredient. Or pork chops. Or churros!

This may be hard to believe, but my answer is: beer.

Guys drank it, but I never did. It smelled bad to me.

I had wine from a young age, too. By comparison, beer just seemed kind of.....gross.

From the time I can remember, I always had a small glass of wine with holiday dinners. Still a wine drinker to this day, don't like beer at all.

Wow. For me it was really Funyuns. My mom refused to let us indulge in that snack; also, Munchos.

I didn't have sushi until I was 16. Now I'm obsessed.
Sushi! Delicious! I think I was twenty before I had it, but there also weren't too many sushi places where I live till relatively recently. I'd seen the kind in the grocery store, but I remember thinking that wasn't likely to give me a very good first impression.

I'm 38 and I still have not tried sushi.

I was in high school before I had Chinese and ate real (delicious) Mexican food in California, for the first time, at 35. I say that because I do not put Taco Bell or the shells they sell in the grocery store in that category, and the restaurants in my town only get half a point. On that note, I am pretty sure I have only had Level 2 Chinese food.

What else... I have always been a big fruit & veggie lover but there are several things that were not available in our stores and farmers markets until I was in high school, my 20's or my 30's. The first time I saw or tried an eggplant was in my mid 20's. Same with plantains. I still have fond memories of Kiwi being introduced when I was in 6th grade.

I could be here all day.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

I have not tried meatloaf yet :-/ I have been told I make a great one (it's the bacon), but I will not eat it. I usually can not finish a hamburger or a sausage patty. I have a weird love/hate thing with molded ground meat.

I did not have salmon until I was in my late 20's or early 30's.

Pork skins, beef jerky and sweet corn bread (I spit it out). All are very common in the south. *Add deer, bear and wild hog to that. I was 25+ with all, and tricked into my first delicious bite.

I'm like BotticelliBrit - such a fussy eater as a child and young adult, there'd be too many things to list!

I was super picky, too as a kid. But I wouldn't turn my nose up to it until I tried it. I mean, how could I know if it was gross or good until I tried it.

I was raised in a very culturally diverse community so I was eating int'l cuisine from a very young age...but missed out on some of the basic all American fare until I moved to Ohio.
