Face up to a challenge!

What would you like to overcome?

My challenge is nest Thursday I have to have an MRI of the brain which I have been getting every year since brain surgery 5 years ago and this year I'd like to undergo it without anti-panic pills even though I am claustrophobic. It's uncomfortable: my head is in a vise-like cage and I can't move for an hour. If you don't know what an MRI machine looks like - google it. I used to be so scared that when I googled it I'd start panicking.

The first time I did it I started screaming so they stopped it and I had to reschedule and take anti-panic pills to get through it. Since then, I've taken anti-panic pills every year. This year I've been reading that the pills are associated with development of Alzheimer's and since I've taken the pills in other contexts I want to avoid them when possible. Also, I feel since I've been through this 5 times I ought to be able to persuade myself that no... the tube isn't going to crush me, and no...I'm not buried alive.

Encouragement is very welcome!

So... what challenge are you facing that you'd like to overcome? We're strong and tough - we're curly girls! Maybe we can all support each other.

I think you'll do very well and get through everything, cp.

As for me, I'm not up to any challenges right now. My career is a challenge, and that's enough.

Thanks, Ninja! I hear you (as that saying goes).

OMG I hear you about the MRI machine! I also have to take something when I go in there. Do they have a wide bore near you? That helped me a lot. I told myself if I ever need another maybe I'll try it without pills, as my last visit was a piece of cake.

I'd like to overcome my anxiety on the interstate... as a passenger. Can't imagine myself as a driver yet! I've been putting myself in positions to travel the interstate recently. I went from pills to knitting. Next time will be to put down the knitting and convince myself I won't die in traffic.

I know. I can scarcely believe it. When I get to the 5 year mark (in Oct.) I'm going to schedule another Happy Enormous Cheeseburger (or VegBurger celebration day - and I expect all of you out there to celebrate with me. I intend to bore everyone with stories of my fantastic recovery - Humpty Dumpty HAH!

Well it's nothing to what you have experienced, Curlypearl, but I am training for a 5k.

Good luck on your MRI, I know you can do it!

Good for you, Sixel! The freeway can be really scary. There are times when I am driving that I start to feel like I'm about to freak out. My boyfriend does a lot of our driving now :/

CP, what about acupuncture? Could you get that done before going in? I realize your goal is to do nothing, but if you want an alternative.

I think you can do it. You can practice deep breathing and then you'll automatically "go to"that when you start the test.

Go Go Go

I have a fear I'm working on overcoming. It's miles from where it was but miles from where I want it to be. I have my next step planned, I just need the gumption to complete it. It'll probably (maybe) happen before the end of October.

Thanks, everyone. I have to admit, I don't think I'm going to do this. I've been thinking about it. It's not worth if I freak out and have to reschedule the damn thing and reschedule taking time off from work. That's the problem. I'm afraid of being afraid - because it will screw everything up if I freak.

Sixe - I'm so glad you understand! Unfortunately, they don't have a wide bore where I'm going. If they did, I might be able to stand it. The worst part is having my head in that cage and being unable to move.

Mustang, that's terrific. I admire people who do that. If I were younger, and my knees were in better shape, I'd do it too. I think that's great, really.

Hi Perri - very best of luck with your challenge@.

I hate needles so acupuncture would be torture on top of the MRI .
Maybe I can think of some other challenge to overcome. Sorry folks, I'm caving in.

CP, recognizing it is a challenge is a success in and of itself. Wanting to overcome it is a success. Sharing it with others is very brave!
So regardless of whether you are ready to tackle it or not, you are a success!

World - take note! Perri and Ninja, you guys are the best! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I feel much less of a dingbat now.

I googled MRI claustrophobia and was reading about people's experiences. Many emphasized that it's foolish, even masochistic to suffer if you can get pills to help. I have the pills. Some people said it was the worst experience of their life, they peed themselves, they choked, they screamed, cried, fainted. Panic attacks.

Oh, CP. You're so hard on yourself.

I cannot imagine what you describe. One pill (or even ten) is not going to give you Alzheimer's. In fact, if I were you, I would take the pills and drink, which is exactly what I did a few years ago for a morning mammogram in which they did an ultrasound. Mr. Ex-Ninja took me since I was too loaded to drive. I had the test and was declared fine, and then I came home and passed out with a pack of confused but happy dogs.

The point is that the test you're having sounds difficult, and you should let yourself off the hook to do whatever you need to to get through it. We don't always have to tough it out in this world. Life itself is tough enough.

A pill as a one-off for what you know to be a stressful situation is not caving. Do what you need to.
One of our patients had to have a follow up MRI recently following jaw cancer - he only got half way through and refused to go any further with it, you're definitely not alone.

I say do whatever you need to do, so you can get through it. There are many people that have trouble with MRI's and even more that didn't start out that way but end up with PTSD from their DX and subsequent treatments and the MRI's trigger it.

If you want to make it your personal mission to get it done without anxiety pills, maybe try it with a mild sedation like they do for kids. It's all about the baby steps.

Suggestions:

Have a friend come and hold your hand or rub your legs and have then stand where you can see them in the mirror and they can talk to you.

If you have Facebook there are a bunch of brain tumor groups you can join and talk with people dealing with the same issues. They have some great MRI coping techniques.

My daughter ( has never been sedated or medicated for an MRI, she has an uncanny knack for falling asleep the minute she gets strapped in. The techs are always astonished that we have to wake her up when it's over.

I wish it was that easy for me, but every time we get close to another MRI I get scanxiety that gets damn near unbearable until it's over with and we get the results.
Anyone who lives within their means, suffers from a lack of imagination. ~Oscar Wilde

There are only two ways to do things: right or over.
Claudine, you are so right! I am hard on myself - in so many ways! I'm not going to be punished by getting Alzheimers if I take one pill. {{{Ninja}}} - you are understanding and compassionate. OT - When I watch Downton Abbey and I see the incomparable Maggie Smith I think of you because you said she was the character you most identified with. She is hilarious!

Starmie, thanks for telling me about that poor patient who had the jaw cancer. I can't even imagine how awful that must be. Thanks also for the hug! You are such a sweetie!

Inissant - you are an angel! Thanks so much for chiming in. Also, you are right - I have read about patients who didn't have claustrophobia, but one MRI and they developed it!

I read up on recurrence of my brain tumor and I got absolutely freaked. I'm HAPPY to have the MRI to make sure it hasn't come back. I am taking Xanax and will have a nice snooze.

Nothing wrong with a Xanax, CP! Do what you need to do to have your scan. I was very freaked out when I had my MRI, until I got inside it. The loud noises reminded me of the smoke monster on Lost and that was somehow comforting :-/

My challenge is avoiding cigarettes. I broke down and smoked a pack. I could use a big xanax to nibble on myself.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

Hi Fifi,

Your post made me chuckle. The Smoke Monster!

Sorry about the cigs. Do you know what triggered it? Avoiding stuff is very hard - I'm no champ at that myself.

I've actually had MRIs for other body parts and I was fine. It's only the brain MRI's that make me freak - because my head is rigidly locked inside this kind of cage thing which makes the MRI much more claustrophobic. The brain MRI is also much longer than other MRI's - it takes an hour and I can't move the whole time.

I know if I could practice with that cage thing I could desensitize myself but since that's impossible, I'm taking the Xanax.
