Can you train yourself to sleep on your back?

I'd like to be able to sleep on my back for allergy and other reasons, and I just can't do it. I don't know why.

I've got a firm mattress, but it just seems like I am always straining when trying to sleep on my back. I just CAN'T fall asleep that way, and it is very frustrating. Is there anything that I can do to make it easier?
I recently got one of those memory foam pillows. It really helps me to stay in one position instead of tossing and turning. I'm even able to fall asleep on my back which is also difficult for me.

I was getting tension headaches VERY frequently, but the pillow helped A LOT with those.

It's also nice with going to bed with wet hair because then you're not rolling around all over the place frizzing it out.

I wouldn't say it's the *most* comfortable thing ever, but it's working for me.
I think so. Due to back problems, I had to train myself to not sleep on my stomach, which I used to always do. I still do sometimes, but most of the time I'm on my side, and sometimes even on my back. I don't think you can ever be 100% successful, but probably you can sleep in a specific position most of the time.

I learned to sleep on my back after a hamstring injury -- it was the least painful position. However, I don't recommend that!
I had to learn to do so after back problems kept me from sleeping on my stomach. I still prefer stomach but my body doesn't. I fell asleep a few days ago on my stomach and my upper back hurt for a long time after I woke up.
Get pregnant. Since I'm not supposed to sleep on my back, it seems to be the only way my body wants to sleep - even though I was never a back-sleeper before.

Yep, you can train yourself. I had to after I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel. I actually can't sleep any other way anymore!
Hair type: Completely confused: mostly 3a, some 3b parts, and even 2 in places; very fine and thin.

I know several people who have trained themselves; however, I have tried repeatedly and still wake up on my stomach! If you figure it out, please let me know.
There are available this "thingies" that can slip over your arms & shoulders that will prevent you from turning to either side while you're sleeping. Or, just take some ropes and make something yourself that you can tie to the headboard.

The good people do is interred with their bones. Their mistakes live on forever...
I did. It took about 2 weeks, but it worked. I had to make myself turn on my back every time I noticed I was side lying.
I've never been able to.

Everytime I start to fall asleep on my back, I startle and wake up like I heard a gunshot or something. It's very frustrating.

Yes, I've done it. The key is to put 2-3 pillows under your knees when you're on your back. It's much more comfortable that way. I also bought tempurpedic pillows and mattress. (the mattress is actually the Sealy TrueForm)
No, I never could train myself. I HATE sleeping on my back, but after my c-sec surgeris, I couldn't sleep on my side or belly because it was too painful, so I had to sleep on my back. I was miserable ever minute of it and slept badly until I healed enough to roll over onto my belly.

Sleeping on a satin silk pillowcase does the same thing...reduces wrinkles. It's also good for curly hair.

Are you sleeping on silk satin? I've noticed a significant reduction in scrunch marks on my face in the mornings since I bought some silk satin pillowcases.
Due to back problems, I have had to learn to either sleep on my back, or on my side properly (without being twisted half on my stomach). I can now comfortably sleep on either side, or my back. But before, the only comfortable position was the half-twist belly-side! It takes time, but you can learn.
