Thank you...I feel like that episode of Sex and the City when Charlotte goes to the self-help seminar and the instructor tells her she must not be trying hard enough and Charlotte's like, "No, I really am! I AM DOING ALL I CAN!"

Not yet it's an internship technically and another person is coming for the summer. They were honest and said they often call interns back when there's an opening.

I really feel so screwed-up! I interviewed for a part-time job at a teeny theater last Saturday. The man told me they'd have me back for a second interview this weekend. He said they were seeing 7 out of 300 applicants.

No word

I emailed my thank-yous and then followed-up yesterday.

Nothing.

I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. I refuse to believe I'm just this repulsive horrible slob who is incapable of being hired anywhere.x

My mom just got back up for the summer and it's bringing more pressure to get a job and stay away because I can't be around her so much.

I applied to three different Olive Gardens today.

Stupidest assessment test EVER.

There were about ten questions asking about how many friends you've made from previous jobs/how often you see them, etc., etc., etc.

Oh CIBC. I wish I could help you. I've been following what's been going on. And your mom.....just ship her over here and I'll give her an ear full!!

My job is crap at the moment. It was good at the beginning but now it's just awful. I had a breakdown on the train into work the other day. I'm tempted to just hand in my notice.

alot of jobs require experience, if you dont have experience how do it get it without getting the job first in order to get the job?? its frustrating!

the only prospects of more income i have gotten, is from my cousin's aunt who is in the insurance game. she wants to expand her company to dc. So once i become licenced I can help her part time. i dont think much money will come form that unless im full time, but its better then nothing.

Got a rejection letter today for that doctor receptionist job. At least I got a reply even if it was a no. It's been silence for weeks now.

Spoke to my jobseekers guy, in 2 months they are going to start sending me out on work placements - he made a face when he said it and from what I gather (going off newspapers at the moment) its often stuff like stacking supermarket shelves.

I asked him about self employment and he mentioned a scheme where if you have a business plan and have been unemployed for 9 months (aka moi) you go on a business course and you get a weekly allowance same as now.

But, once you start work placements on job seekers you are no longer eligible for it. So I have roughly a month to figure out if it's something I want to do.

I have no idea how to start a business, let alone a successful one. Of course I kinda have a dream, like a lot of people, of owning and running my own bookstore. But is that likely to succeed nowadays?

Am I crazy to consider it? I've never even gotten work experience in a bookstore. I just know I love books, read a lot of YA and review them online.

What do I do?!

Was SO hyped up for this interview and felt like it was perfect for me and then I go in and they told me:

--they were concerned I'd get bored because my last job was so exciting

--the last assistant was a playwright and that caused a lot of problems.

I honestly was in the street sobbing my heart-out right after it.

I feel physically ill 24/7, don't eat, don't sleep and feel like my heart is about to burst-out of my chest most of the time

I'm so, so sorry they did that to you. I don't understand why they brought you in for the interview. It was cruel and says a lot more about them than anything else. They don't deserve to have you, D.

Thank you. It really seemed like an amazing organization and a job. I know I could have done a terrific job at it. I KNOW I could have.

Right now, I just feel so nauseaus I want to just throw-up. This sucks. I know I am a broken record, but what do people want from me and when does it START to get better?

God, I feel for all of you. Don't know what to say. Just wish you all good luck!!!!!

It took me over 2 years to find a job but I figured it was because I am old and my voice is not normal plus the economy. For all of you, much younger, normal voices, economy slightly better - it shouldn't be this way. Wish I could help.

Sending encouraging vibes....

I sent them this email because I have nothing to lose at this point.

Thank you so much for meeting with me today. I really felt a connection when I saw the listing for this job online. Even though I don't have a dance background, I, of course, have always really appreciated it being such a big musical theatre fan, and have taken a bunch of ballroom and swing lessons for fun. (And, I must admit, I also watch a lot of Dancing with the Stars, which has taught me a lot about dancing...and I'd watch that Derek Hough dance the phonebook...does that expression make sense here?)

To address the concerns that came-up in the interview, I am extremely interested in changing fields and have had my share of working on Broadway. It was very exciting and I wouldn't have traded it for anything, but, at the same time, was starting to lose its meaning and I was starting to become jaded. (I had to leave because I didn't want that to happen since I do love theatre!) Even though I'm a playwright, I've been able to be very successful with my writing ever since college (I worked full-time throughout college and after college, worked three jobs before going to first job out of college) and my writing has never once interfered with my jobs. I know that might have been a concern with your previous assistant, but it would not be one with me. I'm always the first person in the office at most of my jobs and always have stayed as late as I'm needed.

I have been interviewing around for a while now, and the jobs that speak to me the most are the ones that combine helping children with the arts. It's made me realize that such an environment would be my ideal place to be and ideal people to work with. I have been on the big exciting end of things, and now I want a change. I love office work and have never once told a supervisor that I was above doing anything. (Also, I always find fun and exciting things in everything...I've sat through several day camp productions and recitals to support my youth group kids!)

I truly hope you can keep me in mind as you make your decisions about this position. I really know I have what it takes, my previous chaotic and high stress office has prepared me for anything, and have been looking for a new perfect fit. I really feel this could be it and all I need is a chance.

If you would like any more references, please let me know. I am attaching the letter my previous boss wrote me.

Thanks again for meeting with me, I really enjoyed our interview and I loved going-through your website...it's an incredible mission and I would love to be a part of it.

I currently live in Philadelphia. Do you think it would be wise to commute from Philadelphia to NYC Monday through Friday? The commute takes about 1 1/2 - 2 hours one way. It currently takes me an hour to get to work here in Philly. I don't know whether to stay in Philly, where I enjoy living, and commute or live in an expensive, undesirable area in NYC where the commute will be around 45mins- 1 hour. The new job will pay about 30% more than I currently make, so the increase of income will be spent on commuting back and forth between NYC and Philly or lodging in NYC. Any advice you have will be appreciated. TIA
thats a toughy! i use to have to commute back and forth and it was murder! I took public transit and sometimes it could take up to 2 hours each way. i was so tired all the time. i moved to be closed to work, and i loved that i did, but its too expensive! I live in dc. i have a roommate but she is moving in with her boyfriend at the end of our lease. i either have to make more money, move back to baltimore and commute again or find a cheaper place in a scary part of town.

have you looked at places in new york? or maybe getting a roomate like i did. maybe even renting a room?

i thinkyou have to decide if the commute is doable. also if its even worth it. you may be making more but if its all going to commuting you really arent making more.
Thanks so much for your response, thelio! I have accepted the job and will be commuting at least for a little while via train. If things get rough, I will move to NYC and get a roommate.

I am actually from DC and I know how expensive it can be. Have you thought about moving to MD or VA just outside of the city? I actually have a friend who is looking for a roommate for her 2 bedroom apartment. She lives in Alexandria near the Van Dorn station. I think she is still looking for a roommate. If you are interested, I'll let her know. She is also a flight attendant and hardly home....There is also this website padmapper.com. It's like a google map search of available apartments listed from credible websites. You can search by price, number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, etc... My friend that I just mentioned found her apartment from there. It's a great website, so give it a try.

I live in Philly now (we're neighbors ) and used to live in NYC, and travel back frequently to see friends. If the job is 9-5 or thereabouts, the commute between Philly and NYC might be over 2 hours. I avoid traveling during those hours so don't know for sure, but it takes about 2 hours during non-rush hour on the bus, maybe driving's a bit faster? I think that a 45 min-1 hour commute on public transit sounds less exhausting and cheaper than driving (or taking the Chinatown bus or Bolt or whatever) between the 2 cities. And there are areas of Brooklyn and Queens that you might think are nice, fun and not tooo outrageously expensive that are well within 30-45 mins of Manhattan. So if I were you, I would either take the job and move, or stay in Philly. It's nice to have options!
Thanks diaspora for the advice! I have decided to commute --at least for a little while. I currently live in the Rittenhouse square are of Philly and I love it here. I am not ready to give it up! I will be commuting via Regional rail to Trenton then in Trenton, NJ transit to Penn Station. This way, I hope I won't have to deal with any traffic.

CIBC, I am just want to offer hugs to you. I know how difficult this time is for you and I am just hoping for the best for you.

Since you are a playwright, have you ever thought of using your skills in that field to create your own projects? You may not generate any income, but you can at least build your resume with your own work. Maybe gathering a couple people who would be willing to work for little or nothing to help you in production? Meetup.com I'm sure should have groups for actors/playwrights/theater arts that you can join so you can link up with people and get projects done most likely for nothing. Joining a meetup group may also give you the opportunity to network with people in the theater/arts world...Or maybe volunteering at a local school, community center, or camp and pitching a play for their arts program? From the few people that I know in the arts, they have created their own opportunities. You may have to too.

I don't know if you have exhausted all of these options, but I just wanted to ask.

I am wishing you the best!

Good luck!!

Thanks for the info! My lease is up and September and I only need a place for 3-6 months max! I'm applying to vet school so i will be leaving the DC area when I get it. I have been looking into some places, but haven't been finding affordable places that even allow short term leasing

I'm giving myself until August, to find another job/ better paying job, or cheaper rent.

i have started volunteering with the washington humane society and I'm hoping maybe if they have any job openings I could get first dibs.

I'm wishing you all the best with vet school, Thelio! I was once on the track (freshman year) and got deterred. I know how hard it is to get into a program so my fingers are crossed for you. There's probably no need to though because I bet you're a smarty

Is the Washington humane society on Georgia Ave? If so, I'm from not too far from there. If you live near the humane society, you are practically my neighbor!

That's something I definitely am always working-on, but I really really need an income and health insurance more than anything right now
