Which of us are job hunting?

1) Had a second interview at the place that gave me the grammar test yesterday. I'm not sure how it went, I know a gazillion people applied for it, so I should be happy to be getting a second interview...but I still don't have a job!

However, the lobby did have a grand piano with a dude in a tuxedo playing Mariah Carey and Sheryl Crowe songs...and what else do you need!

I'm going in on Monday.

And have another interview tomorrow!

I have a phone interview tomorrow with that company I've posted about a few times. They said they don't have any positions open right now, but they want to get a better sense of my skills and career goals to see if I might be a good fit for something that opens up down the road.

I guess that's a good sign. They could have just said "We have nothing available right now" and left it at that.

I am exhausted!

I went to the magazine company today, and the HR portion went really well! The girl was telling me they hadn't had too many good candidates in for it and told me they would need me to start ASAP. Like, Monday! (This was 4:30 today...Friday! ) Weird, but I said that I could! ("Heck, I'll start right now!")

Then I met with two other people...they were nice and it went well and they kept stressing how they really really needed to fill these spots.

However, they looked at my resume and my portfolio and saw how much writing I have done and I think it turned them off I've had that problem a few times! Yes, I DO love to write and eventually WANT to write, but I know at this point, I just need to find a job in my field, learn about things, etc. etc. etc.

I think it really turns them off when it's not a very creative/editorial-type position...makes me nervous! I never know how much to tell them!

But it went as well as it could have, I sent my thank-yous, and they said they'll get back to me early next week.

I guess that's a good sign. They could have just said "We have nothing available right now" and left it at that.

Also, went to a staffing agency for the heck of it, and almost escaped out of the window while I was taking the PowerPoint/Outlook/Word tests. Just so annoying! I know I can do a PowerPoint presentation, but it's hard answering those questions...I kinda felt annoyed because my scores weren't so great (I type 80WPM though!) but I know I have a good enough resume...I'm glad I had a good interview after that, cheered me up!
I had my phone interview today. I think it went pretty well, but I always drive myself crazy after things like this second guessing everything and analyzing every word that I said.

The woman I talked to, who handles HR and a few other areas of the business, said she would look into it and see if they had any immeidate openings that might be a good fit for my skill set, and if so, she would have me in for an in-person interview.

Also, later this afternoon, I got a call from my contact there (the one who first told me about the job) saying that he's overloaded with work and finally asked his boss for someone to take part of his workload, so a position might be opening up sooner than they thought.

The HR woman told me she'd let me know either way if they have any positions for me, so I guess it's a waiting game now. I am a nervous wreck even thinking about the possibility of an in-person interview, but I'm excited too. We'll see what happens.

The only time I really feel like I've blown an interview or gotten too nervous is if I have no sleep in me...it's not rare for me to have major issues with sleeping when my nerves act up, so I have been trying to schedule my interviews for later in the day so I could get as much as I can.
Thanks...but if I listened to you, I'd be working with puppets!!!!

wahooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I TOTALLY just nailed my interview!!!!!!

I was in there over an hour, first with HR then with the manager of the department. She was SUPER nice, only a few years older than me. It was extremely relaxed.

She looked at my portfolio of all the stuff I've been published in and everthing, and said, "You're making me feel like a loser! I haven't done anything cool like this!"

(So if I don't get it, it is OBVIOUSLY because she feels threatened that I'll take over her job. Obviously! Haha.)

I feel good! Even if I don't get it...I'm ready to nail the next interview! Lemme at it!

I called the potential boss to follow-up and got her voicemail today. On her voicemail, she states she'll be out of town for two weeks!

Made me feel better!

Maybe things are just hectic and they haven't hired ANYBODY yet.

Hopefully, everything's okay with her...maybe she won the lottery and is on vacation.

add me to the list...

have y'all got time for a long story?

anyone who's been following along knows that i moved across the province at the beginning of last year for a full-time job. my contract in Ottawa was up at the end of January of 2006 and it was the week before Xmas 2005 when i got the call offering me the job here in London.

but the woman that i'm working for made it flat-out clear that she didn't want me here and said so when she offered me the job. to wit:

you're not the person i want to hire, but you won the competition so i have to offer you the job.

yes, she said that.

and since i got here, she's done everything possible to make me feel even more unwelcome.

now the branch i work for is being transferred to the federal gov't starting in November and they are not taking the secretarial staff. i won't have enough seniority to be moved to another area in the office.

so i'm hunting...

i'm starting with other ministries within the gov't but haven't got a single nibble there. last month, i started going "outside". hopefully, something will happen SOON!

but not TOO soon, as i'm having surgery on June 1st and will be home for a week to 10 days!

Awww, the cat hosptial sent me a rejection letter. I didn't even go for an actual interview and they sent me a rejection letter. Jeez... just don't call again, I'll get the hint.

I have two interview tomorrow...

1.) a second interview with the place that gave me the grammar and spelling test then had me meet with HR...meet with the boss tomorrow

2.) some place that packages horror movies
Also, I think I'm going to take a few days off from mediabistro and hotjobs.

I'll see if anything becomes of my interviews that I've gone on, and of the resumes I've sent all over the place.

I kinda need a break from applying...I'm starting to dream about my resume!
Christine,
You seem to get a ton of interviews! How many resumes do you send a day?
How did it go today?

I spoke to the a woman from an employment agency on Friday. She suggested I "dummed down" my resume. She said that she had spoken to someone about getting me a customer service job at a finance company that I am interested in working ( AM Best) and they said I wouldn't want to be doing that from looking at my resume. I just want to get my foot in the door but even that is difficult.
I go through waves...some nights I'll stay up until 3 AM like a madgirl and apply to EVERYTHING...others I leisurely check out stuff I want.

I'm starting to feel kinda overwelmed, too much stuff coming and going. It's been nice to take a break from my crazy commute and catch up on my sleeping, but now I'm starting to feel a little anxious and want to get back in a routine.
Another installment in what I'd like to call, "Why Did Ashlee Simpson Get A Reality Show and I Don't?"

Today, I went on a third interview in two weeks with the company that gave me the grammar test. The first two interviews, I spoke with a fellow who has the same last name as Ugly Betty's boss. (If you know me, you know how much I love Ugly Betty. I AM Ugly Betty!)

(I took this as a sign. I take a lot of things as signs. I need to stop doing that.)

At today's interview, I spoke with another guy.

Potential Boss: Do you have any more questions?

Me: No...Daniel really went over everything with me last week...

(shoot! His name isn't Daniel! That's Betty's boss! Then I thought, "You know what...if you can't laugh with this guy, then you don't want to work with him!")

Me: You know why I called him Daniel by mistake...because Ugly Betty's boss is named Daniel Meade!

Potential Boss: I LOVE THAT SHOW! It's the only good show on TV. I just watch Ugly Betty and my Will and Grace and Sex and the City DVDs every night! I'm tired of all this reality show crap!

Me: Except, of course, for Dancing with the Stars!

Potential Boss: OF COURSE!

So, that was that! Went well, but I probably won't get it. I never do. The guy shook my hand on the way out and said, "See you later!" And I went, "Oh...but WILL you, really?"

Then I went to another interview, at a place the packages horror films.

(Cuz...you know...I just love horror movies...yup...I'm glancing at my DVD shelf now...there's Audrey Hepburn movies and Rodgers and Hammerstein movie musicals and TONS of bloody horror movies. Just can't get enough of them )

Utter randomness! I really just wanted to get out of there. Later I told my friend, "It was so weird!" and she went, "What did you expect from a place that packages horror films?"

I was in there for all of 90 seconds, and had to sit in a chair which majorly sunk in so I was pretty much sitting on the floor!

The dude begins our interview with, "So, ask me questions."

Then tells me, "This office is very slow. Not much happens, and I'm not here most of the time."

He asked me if I knew Quicken.

I told him no, in hopes that he'd dismiss me.

He didn't.

I finally get to leave, shout a hearty, "CONGRATULATIONS!" at the very pregnant receptionist and then go skipping down the street, shaking my head in amusement and looking forward to watching my beloved Apolo dance his little heart out tonight.

There will come a time when I just give up on all of this and wait tables and pursue my writing.
