So I just had an interview with Massage Envy. I filled out an application online about two weeks ago and received a call yesterday afternoon asking if I could come in for an interview. Sure.
I was a nervous wreck because I dislike interviews and besides, I just graduated from college in April with a BA in English and I've never had an official job--mostly volunteer stuff here and there, but never a "real" job before. I research the company, check out feedback from employees/former employees so I'm somewhat prepared.
I arrive and I'm asked to fill out an application. I do that, and then I'm escorted to a room off the lobby where the associate who'd called me for the interview sits next to me, her legs propped up in the chair. The owner, a guy, introduces himself. And the two of them flirts the entire time. He talks about how he and his wife own two of the locations near me, but he continues to flirt and share inside jokes.
I felt like a third wheel.
Back to Monster and all of those other career websites where I can hope to attain a job in the field in which I want to work--publishing.

Interview for me tomorrow, 8AM.
A new contract position, basically the same pay, but it's really more in the career path that I really always wanted to get into so it would be great experience.
This is also good because there is a very high chance that the project I'm working on right now is going to get canned in the next month or two, and my job will go with it.
I'm shockingly zen about this one. I don't know why. I just am going to do my best in the interview and what happens happens. I can't let every interview feel like life and death anymore.

Good luck CMB. You have a great attitude toward the interview. It will probably help you feel less nervous.

Even though you're "shockingly zen," I'm still going to send you good luck vibes. Here you go!!
And guess who was just offered the position? ME! It's my first job and I need the money (Who doesn't right now?) so I accepted. I start tomorrow from 10-4.
GRE you say? Good luck!!

Well, that went about as well as I could have hoped.
I think I came up with pretty good answers to their questions, and even made up a really freaking good answer on the fly for one that stumped me initially.
And, they actually have a knowledge gap in my area of expertise, which was nice to hear since I thought my background wasn't a perfect fit.
They will decide by this afternoon who is getting offers, so at least there is no suspense. I had to run straight to the airport to pick up my husband, but as soon as I get home I need to rattle off some quick thank you emails.
If I don't get it, it's nothing I did wrong. I know that my background isn't perfect for a lot of the work they do, so if someone else fits better, so be it. Keeping my fingers crossed though.

Holy crap. They called me two hours after I left and offered me a job.
I still am making peanuts for pay (it is a whopping $0.68/hour more than my last job) but it is a great career move for me.

October 1st.
I had a slightly awkward encounter this afternoon, though. I went in to tell my current boss that I'm leaving for a better opportunity, and the first thing he did, before I could tell him, was hand me a little award for my hard work and tell me how valuable I was (managers at the company have these things sitting around to give to people when they do well - my husband has gotten one twice). And then I had to tell him that I was leaving. He was really nice about it - he's known I've been looking for a better job the whole time I've been working there.
So....I now have a little certificate for $25 to spend at the company store.....in the next two weeks before I leave. LOL.

I applied to jobs late last night, and then my phone rings at 1 AM.
It was a NYC cellphone area code, and I was actually concerned that somebody was in trouble and I picked it up.
Man: Hi is this CIBC? You sent me a resume a little while ago.
Me:...Why are you calling me at 1 AM?
Man: Because you just sent it to me so I figured you'd be awake.
Me: It's 1 AM.
(I hang-up.)
I was telling this story to somebody today and she was appalled that I didn't jump at the chance to talk about a job, and defended the guy by saying, "You WERE awake and maybe he's a workaholic and never stops working and you really should have talked to him."
Now I'm secondguessing myself.
I mean...hello. I've worked for enough crazy people. What on EARTH needs to be talked about at 1 AM that cannot wait EIGHT HOURS?
This woman said it was okay since I was sending resumes out late...but isn't sending an EMAIL different than CALLING SOMEBODY? Emails are sent to be read/answered at your convenience.
The woman was a bit condescending and said, "I guess you don't really want a job."
Am I crazy???? Who on earth makes business calls at 1 AM?

I would not want to work for someone who thinks it is acceptable to call me at 1 in the morning. Ever.
Submitting resumes late at night does not equate with late night phone calls. That's just nutty.

I think you did the right thing cibc. Last weekend I had someone call me at 3pm on a Saturday for a job (I didn't pick up since I didn't know the number). Next day, this guy calls me again.. 8pm on a Sunday wtf?! Needless to say I never responded, if someone like that doesn't care about calling you at 1am before you work for them... I can only imagine what they'd do if you were working for them.

I know!! I accepted the position but I'm still looking for other opportunities, too. I'd love to work at Barnes & Noble since I'm so passionate about books and I've an English degree so it'll come in handy a little.
I live in an Atlanta suburb and I have MediaBistro and BookJobs bookmarked. I contacted a small publishing company on BookJobs about a Proofreading position that opened up.

CIBC, the normal thing to do if someone sends you a late e-mail is to respond back by e-mail. Even if you're up late, he doesn't know if that's a cel phone or a landline and who else lives with you - could be little kids or an elderly person or a sick person or someone who has to work early. Someone who doesn't have any respect or consideration for others or basic social skills likely wouldn't make a good boss.
That being said, IF this were my dream job, I would still be interested (as crazy as I am), but for just a regular job, NO WAY.
