That's great news, GP. I hope you get it!

I have some good news. The place I interviewed with last week, the one that asked me to write a marketing plan in 45 minutes, is calling my references. I'm hoping tomorrow brings a job offer!

My mom gave me her famous and age-old, "Nobody hires people with curly hair" lecture again last night.

She's been telling me this for years. I've been interviewed by people with dreadlocks, purple streaks in their hair.

She told me that nobody will hire somebody who looks like "Curly Sue" for ANYTHING. (A guy in the airport told me my passport photo looked just like Curly Sue last week. Of course, she is managing to turn that innocent and funny comment from a complete stranger around and use it to be vicious.)

So frustrating to have to deal with that on top of everything else.

I'm interviewing with two temp agencies on Thursday. I know a lot of actors who temp and you can get some gigs that are pretty great and easy money, too.

Been searching for a job since January of last year, then I graduated in May of 2010 . . and I'm still looking. It's thoroughly discouraging when you find out a company is looking for someone with credentials crazy similar to yours, you apply and then you don't get a call or an opportunity to interview.

Oh God. So this is what it has come to.

6 jobs in the local paper, one of which states:

'Looking for lovely sales person. Film Star Looks. Youth'.

Gag. Or:

'Toe Nail Cutter'.

Gawd, kat. That's terrible. Beyond absurd. Film star looks? Film star looks?

Frau, what happened?

Yay, mrsp! Let us know what happens.

I got rejected for a job without even getting an interview. Apparently they had a lot of applications. I'm disappointed as I matched the job spec scarily well and I think I was a really good candidate.

I've had a test for every job I've interviewed for. These have ranged from a verbal and PowerPoint presentation prepared in 2 hours on an assigned topic, a 1 hour project design, a 1 hour mock focus group, and a 1 hour proofreading and data analysis write up. As much as I like these tasks as part of a job, I'm getting very tired of demonstrating my capabilities each time I am invited to interview for a job. I thought perhaps a Ph.D. and a resume filled with actual work experience would indicate some level of capability.

Me too! Seriously, there was a job posting that described me to a T, and NOTHING. Grrr! I am very, very discouraged.

Grr, don't get discouraged everyone. I know it's tough, but something is bound to come though. I wish I had the money to start my own business. I would hire all of you!

I'm going to stop telling my mother anything.

Me: The staffing agency I'm going to tomorrow is run just by women.

Mom: They're not all lesbians, are they?

When this has happened to me in the past, I try to convince myself that it's a situation where the company had to post the job just as a formality. They weren't actually looking. They already had a candidate in mind, but to get around all the HR red tape they had to post the job anyway. So even if you're perfectly qualified, they're not calling anyone about it, and just handing it to an internal transfer person.

I know my job search is nothing compared to you guys who want full time jobs. But...I have a question..
when applying at a food place, what is the optimal time to go? in the morning? in the afternoon? Does it matter? I know they get busy at certain times so I wouldn't want to come at a busy hour.

It's true; thanks, Who Me?.

I've also had the situation where a job is posted and reposted repeatedly over time and I apply for it each time and NOTHING. Why do they keep posting it? Why do they not even contact me to say "thanks but no thanks"?

For all of the jobs I apply to, I use my LinkedIn network to see if I have a connection to the company where I'm applying, and I ask that connection to pass my resume on to the hiring manager so at least I can know that my resume is making it to a real person, but I haven't had any success with this method either.

I have gotten rejected from probably 100 jobs now since my last interview. I can tell you I've applied to 36 jobs at 3M alone, 32 of which I got rejected from with no interview. One I got a phone interview because my husband knew someone and basically asked them to interview me. The other three are still pending.

I have a M.S. in Materials Science and 3M is a materials company. I had a 4.0 GPA in grad school and a 3.76 in undergrad, I have multiple scientific publications, my resume should be good enough to at least be considered, but it just isn't. Every job just gets swamped with applicants, I think.

I've had that happen countless times. When a place is getting hundreds of resumes for any given position, you're basically sending your resume into a black hole.

Have you gotten any unbiased feedback on your resume? Maybe it's as easy as making a few tweaks or adding some key words. If you apply online, you pretty much have to include key words from the job posting or you'll never make it past the initial scan. I have definitely been getting more interviews since I hired a career coach. She reviewed my resume and gave me some great tips for positioning myself better.
