Actually, I turned DOWN a job two weeks ago (I know, I know...I'm not allowed to be complaining anymore)...get this...my friend got me the interview...it was at a call center for theatre tickets in this huge company...which would be a tease to be working in that building and not be doing anything in my field, especially since my last job was so PR and writing-heavy.

The pay was much less than I was making with my last boss (and that says a lot...............................)

The guy was VERY friendly but a little strange in the interview...he was like, "I just can't explain it. THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU!" at the interview...that I had amazing energy, and a sense of humor, was passionate about theater. It was really nice to hear, regardless. Sooooooooo...I was out-of-town visiting friends and my phone died last Friday and we were out all night and got home at 1 AM. I get in and plug my phone in and he had called and TEXTED me three times each frantically trying to get a hold of me. Ummmm? TEXTING? REALLY?

I call him on Saturday morning and turned down the job. I had to do it. I really didn't want it and felt like I'd be stuck there for years...I felt better doing that.

But had another really great interview on Tuesday. They stressed a sense of humor and energy were important and the woman was cracking-up at me and commented on how much energy I had. Also, it was down the block from the building my mom grew-up in! Crazy!

And I'm going in for a temp job interview tomorrow...for a maternity leave fill-in. The money' s actually great. I will so take that. In fact, maybe I will temp the rest of my life and write...maybe it's a chance to see things and meet different kinds of people.

I have a job interview today. FINALLY.

My husband's lab had a contract position (as opposed to their normal salaried positions) open up and he gave his boss my resume. It would be crappy pay, no benefits, and only guaranteed for 3 months, but it would finally be some experience for me.

DH's other boss came into his office yesterday and said "Congratulations, I hear your wife is getting a job" so I gather they want to hire me but they need to talk to me and make sure that they're not trying too hard to shoehorn me into a position that I'd be miserable at. My husband says it would be meticulous, tedious labwork that requires a perfectionist to do it well - and I'm not sure what it says about me that I think I'd be really good at that. Ha.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much.

Gah.
Frustrated!!!!

I had an interview today and the guy was very interested in the "gaps" in my resume and why it took me so long to find a job after graduation. (IT WAS SEVEN YEARS AGO! MUST WE REHASH IT?)

It took me a little less than two years to find a full-time office job after graduation. All the while, I worked two jobs...I was working seven days a week while I worked! (This is all on my resume, but I guess those other jobs weren't "real" enough for him.)

I was laid-off in March 2007 and started my most recent job December 2007. He was all about knowing about that gap too.

I'm going on 7 months without a job now and I'm really nervous that I'm just destroying my resume by being out-of-work. He made me all paranoid.

Doesn't he realize how bad it is out there????????

Sigh. My job application got "disqualified" on a technicality. The thing is, the technicality is not even real. They made a blatant mistake. HR emailed me saying I don't qualify for Federal Work Study. False. I even double checked by calling financial aid. Of course I qualify for FWS, that's why I applied for that specific job!

I've been trying to get a hold of this lady, and apparently she's never in the office. I emailed her today. Waiting for her reply.
I know the job market is really bad. I work at a lab in rockville, md. its thru georgtown. if anyone has a life science degree (biology, chemistry, biochem, ect) you can apply. here's a link:

CIBC - don't let that guy shake you. It is TERRIBLE out there for jobs right now, and I'm a prime example of the fact that in an economy like this, a lot of getting hired is who you know. I got hired by my husband's boss. He told me that he was picking from a giant pile of grossly overqualified applicants, so he might as well pick the person he knew. And it makes me feel awful in some ways, but I sure as heck am not going to turn it down.

I finished up my M.S. nearly a year and a half ago, and I have only had three *interviews* between then and now. I've been lucky that I'm married and my husband got a job right when we finished school (I swear, he leads the most charmed life), or I'd be working retail.

My sister recently got a job, and everyone there is shocked that she got it without knowing anyone. In her case, her resume contained all the "keywords" that let the computer send her through to an actual person, and the woman that read her resume connected with her personally and wanted to hire her. Her company hired around 10 people at the time she was hired - she was the only one without a personal connection to get her in.
That's great CMB! I hope it's a good experience for you.

I got called in for a job I applied to about a month ago which sounded PERFECCCCCCCCT for me. They had asked for writing samples with the application, so I guess they liked them!

My interview is on Friday and the woman asked me to send her my references now. I sent the usual suspects and also a good friend of mine who is a pretty famous actor in the NYC theatre world and did a show with these guys. All my other references were people I worked directly with, but I've never worked with him...just figured that it couldn't hurt to have him on my list...I'm ready to pull-out all punches.I called him before to give him a heads-up not to be too confused if they randomly call him to talk abotu me.

Also just submitted for a job that sounds like I'd be perfect for AND I already know the person who was the contact! I emailed her on her private account to give her a headsup.

I really feel like all these interviews I am going on are just going in a black hole or something........................
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh good lord, it couldn't have gone better but until I get an offer, I know that means nothing!

They told me they passed around my writing samples and cover letter to the entire department because they were just so great (who says that?!?!??!)

The salary isn't so great, but when she told me it, she kept compensating that the benefits package was amazing. (Good sign?)

I sent my thank-yous and am going to put it out of my mind!!!!!!

I need some advice.

So the HR department at my school mistakenly rejected my application because according to their records, I don't have federal work study. How do I correct this?

I've made phone calls and sent emails to the right person. She responded with "We need to wait 1-2 days until our system updates. Then I will have to verify that you do have finaid."

Needless to say, those 1-2 days have passed, and my application status has not been updated. This person is never in the office and I can't get a hold of her.

What should I do? They keep referring me to this lady, but she's very unhelpful. I feel like she's blowing me off. I am going to try to talk to someone else if I can. Any other advice?
