AI tonight - 5/01/07

I normally like Jordin, but this was not her week that's for sure. She didn't seem to know how to pick the right song for her voice like Lakisha and Melinda did.

I thought Phil did good. Then Lakisha came out and I thought she did circles around him. Then Blake came out and I thought he did a fantastic rendition. . . unique. . . my husband and I both loved it. Then Melinda came out and again her vocals did circles around the others.

I would say in order of how I liked last night's performances it would be: Melinda and Blake tied for first, Lakisha, Phil, Chris and Jordin.

I think Lakisha needed last night's performance to keep her from getting eliminated.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by most everyone last night. I was expecting it to be an overall trainwreck. I really liked Phil. Jordin was awful. I was rooting for her, but it just was not good. Her voice sounded very shaky and I don't think it was a good song choice at all. There was major controversy on the radio this morning over Blake’s performance, but I thought it was good. People were saying Bon Jovi songs just shouldn't be messed with, but how do you not mess with something, yet make it your own? I don't care for Chris, but he did better than I expected.

My thoughts:

Phil - did great! For some reason though, even though I think he's been great lately, I don't see him being hugely successful if he wins/gets an album.

LaKisha - fantastic. She's back. Her lower register is stronger and she didn't sound at all "screamy" like the judges said she did the past few weeks. I think her performance this week may be enough to save her from a few weeks of weaker performances.

Jordin - loved the hair, the performance - not so much. Her lower register is very weak. On the chorus/higher notes she sounded good. Loved her attitude though during the judges' critiques.

Blake - love love loved him. Part of me almost thought he did a little too much beat-boxing, but I still thought he was fantastic. He's still my favorite to win it all (though he probably won't). Not so much a fan of the darker hair though.

Chris - when I heard what song he was doing, I thought it would be awful. He definitely didn't do it nearly as well as Daughtry last year, but he actually did surprise me with how well he pulled it off. I still don't love him though - he's my least favorite of the remaining contestants.

Melinda - agree with all who said she's channeling Tina Turner. Not my favorite in terms of style (I probably wouldn't buy her album) but I must admit she's got it going on.

I like Jordin but last night was definitely not her night. It is obvious that she is being pushed as a front runner because the judges weren't nearly as harsh as they could've been. If that was anyone else they would've ripped them a new one.

I thought everyone else did pretty well except Chris. His voice is just too whiny, nasally and chipmunky and it's obvious the fame has gone to his head. Definitely thinking he will go home tonight. As for who else will go home, I have no clue probably Phil or Blake.
Phil - Very good. However, I think everyone knew that this theme would be totally in his wheelhouse. If he hadn't hit it out, the only honorable thing to do would have been to turn in his mic and resign right then and there. That's not a criticism...I'm just saying.

Jordin - Bad, but I will say that it wasn't as bad as it could have been. And I was OK with the big hair. The rest of the look needed to go, however. But was I hearing things or did Randy and Paula basically congratulate her for sucking? The pimping of Jordin continues.

LaKisha - I really enjoyed this. A great song choice, and all the more remarkable since song choice has been her downfall for quite a while now. Also, I gotta give her props for taking the opportunity to kiss Simon, because the good lord knows I wouldn't pass up a chance to suck face with that man. LaKisha really reached down deep and made a huge bid to stay. I hope it's enough to save her.

Blake - Fun, entertaining, interesting, hot, sexy, creative, unique, hot, sexy, and fun. This is the Blake that I fell in love with. Definitely a defining performance for him. *sigh* (The hair color, however, is a no for me. Still love, but no.)

Chris - He really suffered for going after Blake. I just find him flat, boring and forgettable. Less nasally this week though.

Melinda - Damn. Girlfriend was hot tonight. I don't know if it was my favorite performance of hers </Randy> but considering how far out of her genre she was, I thought it was pretty fabulous. She owns the stage, and it seems like all the personality she shows while singing is now coming out even when she's not singing. I think she's really come out of her shell.

I've said it before but I'll say it again...it terms of knowing how to perform, how to put together the whole package, Blake and Melinda are light years ahead of the others.

I thought everyone was good except for Jordin and while I thought Chris did a good job, it was not the best. I agree with everyone that Lakisha, Melinda (! You all know how I feel, I don't usuaslly have love for Melinda), Blake and Phil were the best.

I would love to see Blake win this competition...

I was also hoping they would do some of Bon Jovi's lesser known songs - I wanted someone to sing "Always"....
HG's:
Gel: BRHG mixed with Aura Naturalle Gel or B&A Gel
LI: GVP Conditioning Balm or Giovanni Smooth as Silk,
Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (as a DC, before and after dying grays, and like a serum on dry hair)

Method: Air dry 20 minutes, then blow dry for volume.

2b/c mix waves/curls - coarse, frizz prone, med. thick, porous, at-home color for gray, protein sensitive but I still need it sometimes, glycerin-sensitive (I think) in high humidity, mod-CG routine.
I was wondering why they didn't have Melinda go between Blake and Chris. I thought they tried to alternate the guys and girls as much as possible in the line up.

Jordin should have done the acoustic version of Livin on a Prayer. A slower song would have been much better for her.

Overall I was pretty impressed last night - I too thought it was going to be a train wreck.

I am still madly in love with Jon Bon Jovi. He looks better than ever!
If you got nothing to bring to the table - don't even bother sitting down.
From everyone's comments so far, I guess the show was pretty good last night. I'm sorry I missed it.

So since everyone is saying how great Jordin's hair was, I looked on the AI website to check out her style and products (like someone posted last time) but I couldn't find any info. Anyone have the info?

Even when they're all, "yeah I know I sucked, you're right"-- they try to make it seem as though they agree, but really they are just trying to lessen the blow of the criticism.

I couldn't stand Jordin's little dialogue and I hated Chris's argument with Simon a few weeks ago.

I thought the "this isn't your genre" was a weak yet convenient excuse the judges provided for Jordin, seeing as none of the remaining contestants are rockers but everyone else was able to find something that worked with their voices, and a few weeks ago, they made the guys sing Diana Ross. She could have chosen one of Bon Jovi's ballads. Instead she chose their anthem, a song too big for her, the ONE song I really was looking forward to someone singing, and butchered it

Overall it was an awesome night! I loved the theme.

I would rank last night's performances as

Melinda/Blake (can't decide who was better)
Lakisha
Phil
Chris
Jordin

And the two people booted tonight will be some combo of Chris, Phil and Lakisha.
3b/c and outta control
So I finally got smart and watched the performances on youtube, don't know why I never thought of that before! But thanks to ab_star for the tipoff earlier.

In order of how high I ranked them:

Lakisha - WHOAAA baby!!! That was AWESOME!! So awesome that I actually had to watch it twice! I want that on my iPod! I just loved everything about it, down to the kiss afterwards. I so hope she doesn't get voted off this week.

Blake - Now that was entertaining! It definitely kept my attention and made you wonder what he was going to do next. I was a bit iffy in the beginning but quickly changed my mind. Didn't like the hair though. Did anyone else think he looked a little like Simon Le Bon with dark hair?

Melinda - Still not my favorite and while she is a great singer, I still think she's overrated. I'm just much more of a Lakisha fan I guess. I thought the first 30 seconds of the song were really good, but then the rest was just boring. I wonder how she's holding back that surprised look each time, because I think I saw her almost let it slip again tonight.

Phil - great vocally, but the poor guy is just boring. I feel really bad for him because he is a good singer but he's just boring personality wise. There's something slightly dorky about him, but I do hate to see him get voted off just for that.

Chris - I honestly don't remember too much from his performance, so obviously nothing struck out at me other than I don't remember him doing anything really sucky. He's just getting a little boring in the vocal dept because it always sounds the same.

Jordin - sorry girl, but you were the Sanjaya of the week.

OK, I'm bumping this hoping an East Coast curly will give me a full spoiler - I'm hoping against hope Chris didn't get voted off - I know his singing basically sucks, but he is the only eye candy left in a season where the eye candy was seriously lacking (No comments on how this is a singing competition, I know I know, but I like to oogle the youngins )

We're bummed about Chris too. I knew he wouldn't win but it was still sad to see him go. LOL, I thought him and Blake were going to kiss for a minute there! Seriously, I love how they have become such great friends through Idol. They both seem to be great guys.

My daughter and I definitely plan to meet Chris in person one day!
