Default How Do I Pronounce This Cheese?

I'd like to know before I ask for it at Whole Foods and make a fool out of myself:

butterkase.

Thanks!

I think the "kase" is pronounced as k-eye-se. Not sure though, but I think when I went to the Melting Pot, the server pronounced it like this.

Hopefully someone who knows for sure can help.

The German pronunciation of käse is kind of like "keh-ze". And the butter would actually be "booter".

Being German, I'd say buh (but not like buh like b+"uh" - more like the "uh" you would say if you were punched in the stomach)-tah keh-zeh.

So funny you should mention the Melting Pot. I was there a few months ago and had their Feng Shui fondue. I loved it and was determined that for my birthday in September I was going to make that fondue again in my own home where I didn't have to spend $90.

I found the recipe on line and it's the Melting Pot's recipe, and it includes butterkase.

I wouldn't go all German up in Whole Foods because chances are they aren't going to say it perfectly either. So if you roll up and ask for "BooterKheze," they'll be like Huh? You know when newscasters do that? They'll be speaking normally and then hit a Spanish name or something and for those two words only they break into a heavy Spanish-type accent. Um, K.

I'm all about pronouncing words properly, but not so much so that someone who doesn't speak that language won't understand.

For instance, I can't stand the way Italian-Americans (in NY/NJ I'm guessing) say mozzarella. They say, moo-tsa-rell. And then they look at me funny when I order fresh mozzarella, and pronouce it the way it should be pronouced.

Btw, here's a link to the pronunciation of butterkase http://forvo.com/search/butterkase/

Very few things irk me more than that.

I've always heard groo-yehr on all the cooking shows, LOL. IDK about butterkase at all, though.

Bet Sairis would know about both.

Didn't work without having to go thru registration process, which I didn't bother doing

Try this - click on the little speaker symbol - that's the way I've usually heard it

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/gruyere

Buttercase wasn't common enough to be listed, though, LOL

Giada De Laurentiis does this on her cooking shows and it bugs me. It probably shouldn't since she is part Italian but it sounds weird when she's talking about something with no particular inflection and then says "spa-GHetti".

I know she's pronouncing the Italian words the way they are supposed to be pronounced so maybe it's to educate the viewers but it's like she's channeling Tony Soprano mid-sentence.
