Default I need a career change!

I am a frustrated School Psychologist in need of a career change. I have devoted nearly 6 years to this career, but it has not been good to me. I cannot seem to find a better job.

I have been thinking about the field of writing. Can someone please give me some tips on how to get into the field. Do I need to get another degree? Psychology involves alot of writing, so I do have experience. Thanks for your help.

I would like to write articles for a magazine about relationships, mental health, psychology, education etc... A long term goal is writing self help books.

I sent an article to Essence Magazine for one of their "personal growth" sections that anyone can contribute to. I have not heard anything yet. I hope they contact me.

Cool.

And that's one of those jobs that I think starts out as a part-time kind of thing and builds into something full-time.

I don't have any real advice, but if I were you, I'd start writing articles and submitting them to magazines.

If you want to do freelance writing, you don't need a degree, but it helps to take some magazine and feature writing classes so you get the style down. At the University of Washington, the Extension has certificate programs and such in magazine writing. Maybe check something like that out. The important thing is to get into something where your writing will be critiqued to death--to me it's the best way to get better and it helps you develop a thin skin.

I actually like my job and career. I'm finally happy and feel like I belong. It's a really good feeling after so many years of discontent.

I left DC Public Schools last year when I moved out here. I don't know if that's who you work for, but if it is, I definitely understand how frustrating the career can be. I teach sped and esl, so I've got to work with the kids, do all the paperwork, and have the law hanging over my head, in addition to sometimes having ignorant or mean (people who don't even like children) administrators.

I am looking into going into educational administration as an alternative. I really love children, and I enjoy helping them to learn, but it is so hard to effect change on a large scale in the classroom.

If you really like your work, just not all the "stuff" that goes with it, see if you can find something in your field where you are more in control. I sometimes feel powerless to help any of these children because of all the crap I have to do as a "care coordinator." I got into this to teach, not be an administrator. Since they constantly force that on me, though, I've decided maybe I should try to help some other teachers/related service providers/students/parents/_____________ out by actually getting the training and trying to make some positive changes.

So, if I could change careers it would be in the same field - education - with a different track.
