Why is it I am more productive doing things when I'm working and have no free time than when I have no job and all the time in the world?

It could be because when you're really busy you have a schedule and you know you need to get things done by a certain time?
Can you sleep with the TV on?

But I did have a brief love affair with some Cheez-Its.

Yes, so long as she or he hasn't had anything revolting in his or her mouth within (very) recent memory. Same is true for kissing one's partner, imo.
