Default Is this true: Train your digestive tract to have regular BMs

I heard this on the subway yesterday and I wonder if it is true:

From what I overheard this person read that if you sit on the toilet for 10 minutes at the same time each day your body will train itself to have bowel movements every day at the same time.

I am just curious because I never heard this before.

haven't heard that. but sitting for 10 minutes several times a day when you don't have to go may cause hemorrhoids.

ETA: i think the only reason i responded is because it finally gave me a reason to use that smilie!

Haha. I was thinking the same thing. 10 minutes is a long time. I like to be in and out in under a minute.

But then I thought if they are just sitting there and not straining is it so different than sitting in a chair? I should have butted in the conversation. lol.

I can't believe I am responding to this thread, but here goes.

Yes, you can "train" yourself to be regular. I'm a medical professional, so I'm not pulling this out of my a** by the way! I don't know about sitting on the the toilet when you don't have to go, but I had to "retrain" myself when I started working again. Being home all day every day, I was able to go whenever I wanted. After returning to work, I don't want to go between the hours of 6:30 am and 6 pm. I don't want a BM to make me late in the morning, and I don't want to have to go before I am long home from work. So, when the urge came up during my first couple of work days, I resisted until I got home and made sure to go in the morning at my ideal time, and everything just fell into place from there. It really only took 2 days. My body even recognizes that weekends are "anything goes!"

The mind is a powerful thing, so sitting there and "tricking" your bowels may actually work. Hunger pains and growling are an example of your body being trained. It is not that you actually NEED food at that time, but your body is used to eating at certain times each day, and if you miss this time, it will go ahead and begin the digestive process without you--which is the rumbling and growling you feel/hear!

^^ me too. in and out! i think it doesn't matter if you aren't straining. the shape of the seat and how it allows pressure to be put on the rectum, whether you are straining or not, is what can cause hemmies.

Being someone who is recovering from a fissurectomy.I'm still dependent on laxatives and Meatamucil otherwise I cannot go.I've tried to wean myself off of these but ended up constipated and spiltting my area fo surgery.So,I guess I'll stick with the laxatives and Metamucil.I wish I could train my bowels again.

They key is to try to recognize the urge, and not ignore the urge. Most people with constipation problems (myself included) have learned to ignore the urge for years on end and that's the training we need to un-do.

we do it with kids.. sometimes kids ingore the urge to go and become constipated with leads to encoperesis.. so we toilet train them.. with consists of putting them on the toilet for 10 minutes at a time..

i guess you could try it on yourself..

OMG, i did the SAME EXACT THING just so i wouldn't have to go at the hospital. took me about a week though.

Gandhi did it. He had all sorts of issues because he left his father's death bed to have sex with his wife or something.

It hasn't been very long for you yet. Increase your fiber like oatmeal and other soft grains and decrease the laxatives over time and it'll be ok. Our colons are pretty amazing and go back to normal before you know it.

You can train yourself. You should have the urge after eating a large meal. More in = clear it out. Eating oatmeal, yogurt, and other colon 'friendly' foods in the am along with hot coffee can get things rolling.

I didn't purposely try to train myself, but I have a BM almost every day right after I eat breakfast.

I had the same thing happen to me. When I first started working a temp. 9-5 job over my Christmas break, I used to get really bloated and uncomfortable after lunch because I really had to go and I never would. There was way too much traffic in the bathroom.

Some way, some how, my body got on a schedule of being ready to go as soon as I woke up every morning. Like clockwork.

I've had a long day so it's entirely possible I'm just zoned out. What does training himself to have bms have to do with leaving his dying father to have sex?

Some of us do have "broken" colons, though, no matter how well we treat them. I'm jealous of you trainer folks. I too need fiber and laxatives, or try as I might, it ain't happening.
