From the tone and content of Amneris's many posts, I have a strong hunch that she has plenty of her *own* ideas to use. And the fact of her annoucing her scholarship (which she is clearly proud of) and using it as a touchstone for larger discussion of the general topic does not seem wrong. I see no hint of *cheating* if that was your implication.

Amneris,

Others have not raised these particular points, so I will add on the following:

- a willingness and ability to stand up for yourself and for others, no matter what

- a strong moral code

- perserverance and diligence

- understanding people, respecting them and relating to them well

- really listening carefully

- returning phone calls (promptly)

- good keen judgment about people, issue spotting and strategy (which gets more developed over time)

- excellent writing and rigorous analysis; excellent oral advocacy skills

- strong time management and organization skills

I was not implying she is cheating. But this is a thread yopic I would expect of a teenager in middle school, not someone as educated, outspoken and passionate as Amneris.

At least it's not about race or ethnicity. LOL

eta: Congratulations, Amneris! I've nothing to add, but I'm sure it will be a great essay.

I guess. But this reply of yours reminds me of a thread about mentors and role models and some feeling that was something younger people care about and not *grown ups* to paraphrase that thread. I think you're never too old to have role models and mentors (although at some point, hopefully you will also be the same for others younger to you).

Likewise, the happy passion and pride that rings through Amneris's post in starting this thread is a good thing. A thread like this everyday might get stale or tiring. But she is really excited about law school and earning this scholarship. I, for one, would not want to piss on her parade.

Fair, ethical.

I am glad my divorce attorney was pretty fair defending me and setting realistic expectations for me.
I did not even read the stuff she gave me ( because I was in such a fog at the time) and the fact that I came out of that mess with almost exactly half of my assets was strictly her doing.
I will be forever thankful for that. My ex could have walked away with everything I wouldn't have cared ( at the time!). Would have been very sorry later.

I thought I would start by brainstorming what the highest standards of the legal profession are and what some positive personal characteristics would be, so I am curious as to what others think. What are positive (or negative) traits that lawyers should (or shouldn't) have? What are personal characteristics that people in general should have and how do they relate to those for lawyers? I'm finding it's easier for me to say what a lawyer should not be like and what I don't want to be like than what a lawyer should be like. But I also don't want to sound cheesy or insincere or cliched - I want my statement to stand out.

TIA!
I think you would have better luck if you thought about the characteristics that you actually have , and not what you think they want to hear. They will be getting lots of essays saying the same boring ******** ,so if you speak from the heart and are honest about yourself you can make a better impression and stand out from the crowd .
I also think that if you have dreamed about being in your chosen field enough to apply to law school then you must already know what the standards should be . If there is a code of ethics or something i would check it , but if not just use what you know .
all this is a personal statement and all you need to know is already in you. just sit down and write it . Over thinking it can make things worst and make it harder than it shoud.
GOOD LUCK

actually, i was joking about the yopic. probably a typo? it wasn't my bunny; it belonged to another member who had it in her signature. it's a long story. really, it's a short story, but unless you could see the bunny, it makes no sense. it's sort of a gotta-be-there joke...

I'm a paralegal and have worked at a law firm for well over 15 years.

The best attorneys are organized, have excellent time management skills, treat their clients honestly and with respect and return their telephone calls promptly.

The firm I work for deals mainly in criminal defense and family law. I know for this type of work (where you are dealing with the average person off of the street) it is necessary that the attorney be able to communicate effectively, in plain English, without using a lot of legalese.

You should also learn patience. Once you are an attorney you will be amazed by the number of clients you will have that need to speak to their attorney (or their attorney's paralegal) numerous times EVERY SINGLE DAY .

Lastly, the best attorneys I have worked with do not spread themselves too thin. The money is good so it is hard to turn away business, but it is sometimes necessary to do so. If your caseload is overburdened you cannot produce top quality work and results.
