What is up with acid/acid attacks?

All of a sudden I keep hearing about all these stories (on the news, from friends) where women are getting acid thrown on them.

And my friend just told me about this women in Chicago who was doused with acid by two guys in an attempt to steal her purse.

What the hell? For some reason, this really scares me because you can get acid practically anywhere. Anyone else disturbed by this phenomena?

Yes, I've heard of it being done in other countries though. If a woman rejects a guy's advances, they sometimes throw acid on her to partly make her 'undesirable' by other men.

This isn't new. I remember a string of acid attacks when I was in middle school. Really scary! I think that's the attacker's motivation for their choice of attack. Definitely has shock value.

This isn't new. Misogynistic/muslim countries have been having problems with these kind of disfiguring acid attacks on women for many years. In lands where women are of little value (either culturally or religiously), all sorts of shocking things happen to them.

ITA and I remember this too from when I was in middle school.

The woman who got attacked here in Chicago is still in the hospital with burns covering most of her body. The cops think there is more to the attack than a robbery. One of the three who attacked the lady was a 16 year-old girl. They were caught on tape and a cop recognized her from the previous night. She had fled to California and her stupid ass was caught yesterday. It is hard to believe there could be that much evil in a kid. The tape shows them walking around Casually like nothing ever happened.
