Default Generic birth control

I have been on Yasmin for around 4 or 5 months and it has always been $30.00 a month. Last time I went, it was $50 and I was told this was because there was a generic version that just came out. They asked me if I wanted the generic brand, but I said no because it freaked me out a little bit. However, I can't afford 50 dollars a month. How do you guys feel about generic BC? I'm sure it is trustworthy, but I don't want to find out the hard way if you know what I mean...

Also, the fact that it just came out and hasn't been used for more than 2 months scares me, too.

The generics are supposed to have the same active ingredients.

That's terrible for the price to jump up $20.

I work for a drug company and I wouldn't hesitate to use a generic equivalent. They have to prove to the FDA that the generic is bioequivalent to the brand name.

If SuZen knows from experience, then I would trust her. However, I have heard that generics only need to contain a certain percentage of like ingredients, and can therefore be slightly less effective. If this is inaccurate, please let me know (nicely!).

SuZen? Can you weigh in on this?

I use a generic BC pill called Apri. Works just fine for me. I don't know what it's brand name counterpart would be, though. Save money, go generic.

Thank you for the replies so far. For other prescriptions I have had, I've used the generic brand w/o hesitation. It's just the BC that worries me because it is VERY important. You all have been a help so far, though.

Generics are the same thing. I took generic BC for years and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

It's pretty much the same thing. I've used generic BC in the past and only had a problem once. In that case, the generic made me feel nauseated while the name brand did not. You'd know if it was different or not working--you might feel a little sick or you'd have spotting, for example. Plus, you'd know if there was a problem with generic BC pills not working. It would be all over the news!

Yes, they have to contain the same amount of the drug substance. Manufacturers of generics are closely regulated in most parts of the world.

Okay, then: we have our answer. Thanks, SuZen.

However, mrspoppers' experience is a little worrisome...if they're the same, why would she get nausea?

There are inactive ingredients as well, which don't have to be the same as the brand name. Possibly one of the inactive ingredients were bothering her.

That's what I was going to say. The inactive ingredients can be different.
