I think I screwed up (HELP!)

So, I'm kind of in a weird situation where I've been spending time at a school that's not my home institution for the last 3 weeks. I have one week left and ended up going on a couple dates with a guy who works here. Nice guy, funny, etc. Today, he said, "So, I know this might sound premature but I'd rather be blunt. Where do you see this going? Long term dating, long distance, etc. or just having fun until you leave.

Now, I like this guy and I'm a relationship kind of girl, but knowing that I was leaving in a week I answered with something to the effect of, "My life is crazy right now and I know I'm glued to (random East Coast city that is about 800 miles from this city) for the next year. I'd like to enjoy the next week adn if we want to see eachother again before I'm back here in December then we'll go from there."

He said that sounded like a good idea. When I turned the question back around on him he said that he had a pretty bad experience w/ long distance and agreed with me. Shortly after that, though, he got all weird and sort of disappeared on me. Did I answer that question wrong? Is it possible that the answer he was looking for was that I wanted a relationship?
"Well I love that dirty water. Oh, Boston, you're my home!"
But didn't you just answer with the truth?

Is it possible that the answer he was looking for was that I wanted a relationship?
I think 'screwing up' would be to give him an answer that he just wanted to hear, that wasn't honest.
do you want a relationship with him ? if you don't want one with him then you answered that question correctly .
nothing wrong with being honest

I can see a relationship as a possibility, but honestly it would be quite quite complicated and would involve the possibility of him supervising me at work (whether it worked out or not). I guess I see it as a possibility but understand that it requires a little more thought than a conversation like we were having at that moment.
