I think a lot of arranged marriages are like this and those are pretty common still. I don't think the whole concept is ew. It's quite natural in my opinion. Okay maybe it's ew to me personally, kinda like how cooking is ew to me. But to each his/her own.

This really can't be compared to marriage.

Well, I mean it is her body, she didn't do anything illegal. I'll admit it's degrading when women resort to sex for things, but they were consenting adults. It's none of my business and it really doesn't bother me.

Because it wasn't just casual sex. Casual sex is about the sex. But this was about getting into the rain forest (hmmm...sounds like a good metaphor). A form of prostitution.

But yeah, I see what you're saying.

Putting on devil's advocate/cynic hat: Isn't all sex a form of prostitution, when it comes right down to it?

It's a difference of opinion. Many women marry for food and shelter and more, this arrangement is not exactly the same(the exchange of goods) but same concept.

No, sex for enjoyment is not.

LOL

I don't care if she wants to screw some guy in the rainforest (sounds kinda hot), but I think she's dumb to have her name connected to this on CNN. It will be interesting when potential employers Google her...

No doubt. I can see me telling my friends about the hot jungle lovin', but then would die of embarrassment when the members of my church all read it online.

It's very possible that her name has been changed. I think journalists often do that at the source's request when it's something like this.

It's not an arrangement I would participate in, and I think it's a little weird to make it so clear it was a "barter" situation rather than just casual sex, but to each her own.

Well, lets hope she used some form of protection. And no matter what she says, it was casual sex that she thought was news worthy. Maybe she wanted her 15 minutes of fame and thought that's how she'd go about it?

Do employers really Google people? Plenty of people have the same name, so does that work making sure you've got the right person?

Can't say I've ever heard of it happening here. And I no one I know has ever googled a date. Maybe it happens more on your side of the Atlantic.

I barter with sex all the time! Just this morning I made all kinds of promises if my husband would get up with the baby!

Seriously, what qualifies as "news worthy" nowadays. And who would even care about this?

This scenario reminds of Pamela Anderson's most recent (now failed) marriage. She told the world (courtesy of the "Ellen" show): "I was paying off a gambling debt with sex, and we fell in love in the process. It's the most romantic thing in the world."

Blech.
