Default Bartering sex for stuff or services

Way to make herself look sleazy... She's not concerned a potential employer might Google her and see she has supremely bad judgement and either pass over her or make a pass at her...?

http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/perso...ef=mpstoryview

Quote:

(LifeWire) -- While she was studying in Brazil during college, the one thing Stephanie Gerson longed to do before leaving was spend time in the thick of the Amazon rain forest. Unfortunately, she couldn't find a tour that would take her past the forest's edge.

So, when a college-aged busboy at a resort she was visiting began flirting with her, she asked him if he thought a tourist could survive alone in the jungle.

"He laughed and told me I was nuts," says Gerson, 27, who works part-time in online marketing for a chocolate company in San Francisco.

Then he told her that he'd grown up in the jungle in a nearby indigenous community. That was all Gerson needed to hear. Although she wasn't attracted to the guy, Gerson flirted right back in the hopes that he would be her jungle tour guide. It worked. The busboy wormed his way out of work, and the two headed into the rain forest.

"It was amazing," Gerson says of her adventure in 2000. "We built our homes out of palm leaves, I saw animals I'd never seen before, he taught me the medicinal properties of all the plants, we picked fruit off the trees, we swam with and ate piranhas. And, of course, we had sex ... for almost two weeks."

Body currency system
Gerson never felt sleazy or uncomfortable with her unspoken arrangement with the busboy.

"It was a good barter both ways," she says. "I got to stay in the jungle, and he got to have sex with a cute, young American girl."

Such trades aren't so unusual. Throughout history, humans have used their bodies to get what they want -- from ancient Egyptian

What's the problem? Some people like having sex.

Dunno. Most people don't characterize casual sex as a barter arrangement. That's kinda odd and makes me wonder why she feels she needs to excuse it in this way.

I'm wondering why/how it's news?!? Do people just call up CNN and say, "Hey guess what, I slept with this guy so he would take me into the rain forest."

I just don't get why anyone would even care?

Because it wasn't just casual sex. Casual sex is about the sex. But this was about getting into the rain forest (hmmm...sounds like a good metaphor). A form of prostitution.

I still don't see anything wrong with it or why it's newsworthy. Then again, I don't see why prostitution is illegal either.

I hope her parents, other family, and anyone else she dates in the future (or any future kids of hers!) don't mind her having her name out there talking about having casual sex. I don't know why that wouldn't be something she'd keep to herself. And I would also be concerned about a future employer googling my name if I were her. I agree that people do this all the time and it's not really news. I also don't see why she thinks the sex was a trade-off for the rainforest trip. It sounds to me like she flirted, he was interested, so they went on an outing together and in the course of that, they were attracted to each other and had sex.

to me, a really strong connection is not clear enough in the article. most of these people sound like they wanted to do it, and got other stuff in the bargain. or they met people they wanted to hook up with in the course of work. awesome

but the girl in the article is saying she didn't want to? that's weird. and sad.

I don't think this concept is uncommon.

People have sex for all sorts of reasons. I don't see what the big deal is.

Which concept? The casual sex? No. The bartering for sex? No, I think the article says it's always been around too. And I'm not sure why it's news now. But maybe people just don't realize how common it is.

To me the big deal is that with the girl quoted in the article, she seems to believe casual, meaningless sex is not ok, so she's willing to describe her situation to make herself to sound like a prostitute, because that makes her feel better.

The situation itself, no biggie to me. But the psychology behind why she puts it that way, when I think Amneris probably got it right for how the guy felt about it:

I've heard of women marrying a guy because he has lots of money. I've heard of women sticking around an extra week or so with a guy for a pair of shoes(yea my ex's coworker told him this). I've heard of a woman staying with a guy overnight instead of going home because he was going to pay for her car bill the next day. I wouldn't do it but lots of people do. In general there's always an exchange of goods in any relationship.

No snark here, but where did the above come from?

How is that different from women who only date men of a certain income? It's still bartering sex for goods and services.

It happens often, and I don't have a big problem with it, although I don't think it's wise for her to have it all over Google.

Because the women may genuinely like the guy...they just limit their pool of acceptable men to those who make above a certain limit. I can understand not wanting to date a poor guy, possibly marry him and end up having to struggle through life. That's tough, even when you love someone.

The woman in the article didn't even like the guy. All she wanted was the rainforest.

a lot of women do this. they just won't describe it as such because they'll have to admit to the reality that they are no different than prostitutes.

there are women right now as i type this who are having casual sex with men they barely know and hardly like in exchange for:

fancy dining and a show

a costly wardrobe or a spending spree

car note or rent being paid

being introduced to the so-called high life and wealthy people/celebrities on their yahts, private clubs, mansions, etc.

getting employment or advancement

if you are a woman who puts out to compensate a man for giving you something, you are prostituting yourself. point blank.

the woman in the article used the term barter. yeah, that was a slippery way to make it seem like something better than prostitution. but that's all it was.

oh, and ew.
