Part of me is surprised, and part of me isn't. Mostly, I'm skeptical.

Personally, I think he did this (in part) to siphon off Hillary Clinton's supporters from the Dems. He knows that many Dems are still upset that Obama didn't select Hillary as his running mate. He also knows that he is being portrayed as a relatively old-guard type of candidate, so he knows he needs to inject some "life" into his campaign. This pick will lead more people to question why Obama didn't pick Clinton. This may result in a bump in the polls for McCain. It may help to "humanize" him more.

Actually, the more I think about it, this is a rather saavy move for McCain.

Actually, the Dems ran a female VP in 1984. And, Madeline Albright was Secretary of State. So these aren't exactly groundbreaking moves.

I know why McCain did it but I don't think it will make much difference. Except people may pause at the idea of having a first term Governor one step away from the Presidency. She really came out of left field!

^^^
Oh no! I didn't mean it that way.

I think its sad that any time someone is selected who isn't an old white guy, it's considered a bold move. I know WHY McCain picked her (the female and youth vote) but this woman isn't that easy!

I agree...if a male candidate comes out of left field, no one seems to mind.
We women are controversial, even to ourselves, I guess.
