So what should I get?
Well, the 7th is my birthday and we celebrated it yesterday since my dad has a class he has to do for work this weekend and won't be home, I believe. Anyways, this weekend my mom is taking me to get my birthday present (since me and my older siblings are hard to buy for we get our birthday money and get to choose something), I was going to get clothes because I don't have a whole lot, and need some more, and I love clothes. But I also want a Nintendo DS. I have played on one before and they are really fun, but I might not have enough to get the DS (I would get a refurbished one), and the accessory kit, as well as a game (It would be nice to get 2). I need to re-do how much it would be and see. I might have enough since I got birthday money from Grandparents, my parents, and from 2 very close family friends. The thing is I don't know what I want to get. It would be nice to have a DS for whenever we move (which is 2 and 1/2 hours away, but I might get knocked out from having to take Dramamine), and to our possible trip to Oregon next summer, but if I didn't get it now I would have still have enough time to get one with saving up my allowance before we would go to Oregon.
So what should I do?

I vote for the DS too. You can always buy individual items of clothing as you go.

Another DS vote here. But I'm a geek and always vote for electronic toys.

I'd get the clothes...can't stand video games...
My oldest son's birthday is September 7 also. He's getting a watch.

I used to hate getting clothes, so I would vote DS..
Ok-sort of on subject-My daughter has been begging for a DS all year for her SIXTH birthday. These things are expensive...do y'all think it's appropriate for a 6 yo to have one if I can swing it? I do know kids in her pre-k class last year used to bring them to school, and it annoyed me that they were allowed to do that...TIA.

No, 6 is too young. I think parents should avoid video games for as long as humanly possible. Age 10 or older is roughly my house rule and even then it's pretty limited.

I vote for clothes. Video games get old after about 3 weeks. I think they are a huge waste of money...

Talk about it. My brothers are video game addicts, and it is so annoying how they are with games. If my brother isn't on the computer on Game Spot, he's making lists of games he wants, if he isn't doing that he is trying to play on the Xbox or the gamecube, and if he isn't doing that he's watching tv, eating or sleeping. I don't think I have enough to even get a refurbished DS and one game, but my brother just told me that they are having a sale right now on games....I don't know what I'll do. I think I might just get clothes and save up my allowance until I have enough to get all the stuff for it that I really want. I'm deffinitely not addicted to them, I rarely play on the video game systems we have now.

I kow what you mean. Unless you buy a new game every three weeks they get boring. But I wouldn't be playing on it that much. I have pretty much decided on clothes already.
Oh, we took a trip to go where we are moving yesterday because my dad thought he found a house, and it would be perfect, but they won't budge on there price. That means we are stuck in a hotel for at least a month.

If you do allow it in your house, make sure there are limits. My kids get a total of 15 minutes a day on the GBA and computer. It definitely prolongs the life of the games, too.

Oh, my brothers would die if that would be the limit! Believe me if I were in charge it would be 30 minutes a day to an hour max, and only that after they turned ten (two are under ten one is older then me). Then the games would be taken and locked up.

So, I logically know I should pass on the DS (age, money), but I know how much she wants it. I do let her play educational preschool games on the computer up to an hour (Spongebob gets 15 min!-d@mn Nickelodian!). Thanks for the input

Ok, I think that video games are ok for kids, if you do set limits. Both of my kids have portable games systems, and I have found that sometimes they are useful. If I have an appointment and I need them to go with me and BEHAVE, I'll let them play their games. Also, they are not all bad. They actually do have some educational value. DS's have several educational games that are very good. There are studies that support the use of video games:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/1879019.stm
I read a different article last week on the subject but I can't find it right now.
My children save their allowances to buy new games. It's not a total free ride.

Well, I went a head and got clothes. I have about half right now, and we'll finish getting them sometime later. I'm also old enough tot wear clip-on earings now to so I'm getting a couple pairs of those, and I need a new wallet as well as a watch.
