the last time I had a flu shot I was sick for the next two weeks. I never had another one and don't plan to.

I wonder how common getting sick after having a flu shot is? All the folks I've known who got the flu shot were sick way more often during flu season, in addition to the funky reactions they had to the shot itself.

In fact, the only person I've personally known who's had the flu this year actually DID have a shot a few weeks ago. She felt kind of run down that day, she said, but then a couple weeks later started getting sick. She was in the bed sick for about 8 days and felt pretty cruddy a couple more days afterward. She has no immunity issues and doesn't work, but her doc still recommended one. She's one of those people who trusts every single word her doctor says as gospel and her response was just that it probably would have been 'way worse' had she not had the shot. Oh well. To each their own I s'pose. As I had already stated, no shot for me.

Our household includes my elderly MIL and my sickly baby. So me, the preschooler and DH (who works with old people) will also be getting the flu shot this year.

DS and I get the mercury-free one.

How do you get that one? I was told the only mercury-free one is the one for infants, and even pregnant women have to take the other one. I wonder if they are more available in Canada...

I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure how you get them in the US - maybe call around the pharmacies to see where it is available? Here its the standard flu shot for all kids and pregnant or nursing women.
