What kind of music do you like? Or do you care what genre it is?

I recently went through a phase like that, and got everything I could find from Breaking Benjamin, Seether, Finger Eleven, Plain White T's, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, and Daughtry. Yeah - I know, sort of all over the place. But that's me!

I have pretty eclectic tastes and a pretty broad range. Right now I'm listening to Pulse by Pink Floyd.

Here's some newer stuff I've been into. I don't know if you have these already, but these are some songs on my heavy rotation right now:

Bruises -- Chairlift
Say Aha -- Santogold
I'm A Lady -- Santogold
Fake French -- Le Tigre
Deceptacon--Le Tigre
I'm So Excited -- Le Tigre (its a cover, but worth hearing)
Iris -- The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Down Boy -- The Yeah Yeahs
10X10- The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Kiss Me-- The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Nothing Going to Change Your Mind -- Badly Drawn Boy
The Funeral -- Band of Horses
Fight Test -- The Flaming Lips
Junk Bond Trader -- Elliot Smith
Put Us Back Together Right -- Headlights
Never Say Never-- Romeo Void
Shame For You -- Lily Allen
LDN -- Lily Allen

I recently downloaded all of Hole's Live Through This. It was my favorite album all through high school, but everything that came out after it sucked and Courtney Love went from bad girl to train wreck. I figured enough time had finally passed and I should hear it again. I'm glad I did. If you never got to hear it, check it out.

Also I saw that you liked musicals and showtunes: You really should check out Hedwig and the Angry Inch if you haven't heard it. Its my favorite musical.

BTW if you you are in a rut, seriously check out Pandora. Its really helped me to keep discovering new music.

These are songs that I've been playing often on my computer:

-"Relax, Take It Easy" by Mika
-"Catch My Disease" by Ben Lee
-"Candle" by Marja Liis
-"Spiralling" bu Keane (their new album, Perfect Symmetry, is great!)
-"Squeeze Me" by Kraak & Smaak
-"Wonderwall" by Oasis (sometimes I get into old songs all over again)
-"Outsiders" by Franz Ferdinand

Guster! My fave...

Satellite is a good song... so is Lightning Rod, Careful, Manifest Destiny, The Captain, Fa Fa, Barrel of a Gun, Jesus on the Radio...

Can you tell I like Guster?

My favorites:
Carbon Leaf - Indian Summer is their most popular album in general, though I love Ether Electrified Porch Music even more, despite the lower quality of the recording

Calexico - their latest, Carried to Dust is FANTASTIC, and everyone should check them out. There are still free downloads of various songs on their label's site here: http://www.touchandgorecords.com/bands/band.php?id=5

Keaton Simons - in my avatar, my buddy, and I love his latest which is fairly mainstream pop-ish, I'd guess

Matt Nathanson - his last CD, Some Mad Hope, is the CD which has had the biggest influence on me of any recording

You should check out Mates of State, The Maine, Fleet Foxes, The Format, Noah and the Whale, Psapp, stuff like that.
That's the less mainstream stuff I have. Nothing I have is really mainstream, but whatever. I'm a music lover too. And anything by any of these bands is usually pretty good.
Here are some samples of each:

My Only Offer- Mates of State
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeVfiJ-ea6Y

If I Only Had the Heart- The Maine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyeP2eZnvlM

Mykonos- Fleet Foxes [White Winter Hymnal is good too.]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeiRe4Qp9Dw

The First Single- The Format
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irSF0OGDX5k

5 Years Time- Noah and the Whale
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8YCSJpF4g4

Tiger, My Friend- Psapp [I couldn't find all of it, but it's amazing.]

The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot- Brand New
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw52t...eature=related

Guernica- Brand New
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd7nZsKeTKU

The Artist- The Hush Sound
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEgRomaUEKM

You Are The Moon- The Hush Sound
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5avW7...eature=related

Wine Red- The Hush Sound
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r6MF...eature=related

Crawling Toward The Sun- The Hush Sound

Basically anything by these two bands is genius.

Check out Roisin Murphy and Imogen Heap, if you haven't already. They fit into some of what you said you liked. Outside of that, I love me some Fiona Apple, Elisa, Anouk, Soul Coughing, and so many others! That's without taking into account my love of more mainstream stuff like Jane's Addiction, Led Zeppelin, Guns 'N Roses, etc.

Ok, the post below is funny to me. They're pretty much all good suggestions.... but calling Secondhand Serenade mainstream, and Counting Crows and Damien Rice not... Hee. Secondhand Serenade is more poppy, yes, but definitely not more mainstream yet!

The Ingrid Michaelson and Imogen Heap suggestions are great ones! I'm always looking for more female artists, because there are few played on the radio. Proportional to how many are played on the radio station I listen to, I buy far more females. And those are the two whose CDs don't disappoint at all. I need to get Ingrid's new one, though!

As for soundtracks, I don't know if you saw Triplets of Belleville, but that soundtrack is awesome! Here's a video featuring one of the tracks (accompanied by one of my favorite dance performances, too):

Belleville Rendez-vous:

Also, Ramalama (bangbang) by Roisin Murphy (with another great dance):
