someone took our rent check!

and it turned out to have been our landlady!

i had put it out on saturday, the envelope was sandwiched in between two netflix, and the addresses were not showing. i guess they were in the area doing yard work or who knows what. they're not super nosy, but they're around a bit here and there.

she must have looked at it to know it was addressed to her, it wasn't just out there for all the world to see. even if it was, it was stamped and addressed for pickup, and wasn't her place to take it! isn't that illegal? aside from being a violation of my privacy!

i wouldn't have even known (and so she apparently thought, as i only found out it was her after i called afraid that it had been stolen) but we didn't get any incoming mail that day, so the netflix were still there waiting to go out, but the rent check was not.

i was polite and said no big deal on the phone, but i realized it was really bothering me, so i just wrote her a diplomatic email asking her not to interfere with our mail again.

did i do the right thing? am i overreacting in it bothering me? gosh it really bugs me.

That's terrible. It may have been addressed to her but it was still yours until it went through all the processes and ended up in her mailbox.

I'm glad it wasn't someone else but she shouldn't have taken it.
I don't think you're overreacting, that's illegal, and a major violation of privacy
She went into your mailbox?! That's a FELONY.
So the landlady went into your mailbox and riffled through your mail? Is your mailbox attached to the house wall? Does it have a lid? The only way for her to tell there was outgoing mail was to look into your mailbox...

thanks for the responses.

to clarify, we have those little hook things below the mailbox (which yes, is attached to the house wall) for outgoing mail. so technically she didn't have to open my mailbox to see it or to take it, but it was still part of my outgoing mail, and none of her business!

she still had to look at it because it was between the two netflix envelopes and she couldn't have known the envelope was addressed to her without actually moving one of the movies or pulling it out and looking.

grrrrr!

I think she called because she thought the rent check had been stolen and didn't want her landlady to think they'd not sent it. Like "someone stole it and we're sorry, we'll send a new one. Please don't penalize us."

yes, i had called and left a message letting her know what happened and asking her to ask her to let me know if she didn't get it in a day or so, in case i needed to cancel the check and send a new one.

(i had checked all around the mailbox in case the wind had somehow blown it down. i also talked to the mail carrier and the post office, because when i first saw it i figured that the envelope had been picked up but not the movies, which seemed odd.)

Off subject but...

Aren't you afraid to put your Netflix out there for anyone to steal? I'd be afraid to put anything out there. We've had a rash of mail theft from mailboxes here and the police just busted a ring of identity theft mail thieves doing just that, stealing outgoing mail.

Tampering with someone else's mail (even if it is on view for the world to see) is a felony, and I would let your landlady know that. First of all, she obviously had to look through the mail to see the letter sandwiched between the movies and she obviously stood long enough to LOOK at the address. That to me is an invasion of privacy.

Something doesn't seem right to me. I don't know why she would think it'd be ok to even stand on your porch if she isn't there to deal with you. Seems sneaky or something...
I just want to do what I want to do when I want to do it.
Just playing devil's advocate here....

Is it possible that the rent check fell out from between the Netflix envelopes?

I would maybe test the theory and put the letter to her in between some movies next time....but don't put a stamp on it. If you get it back in the mail, you have an answer. If you don't get it back, you know she's snooping.
