Default Tampon Q (gross/adult)

I just never got into tampons. It is okay because I've been on the pill for most of my adult life and do not bleed that much. The other day, though, I had to use one because I ran out of pads. I had some in the house from several years ago when I thought I might use them.

I took one of the "slim" fit ones, and used a pantyliner for backup. When I went to the bathroom when I got to work, it had already leaked. Is that normal for slim tampons? I did feel it a tiny bit when I was sitting down... It did seem to like slip down or something during the day...Is that normal? It was mostly comfortable, though, so it must have been in right...I think. My mom never wore tampons so nobody ever told me exactly how they should feel or what I should expect. I never talked about it with friends...

Anyway, I took the tampon out after about 24 hours because I bleed so little I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get it out earlier than that (see why I don't wear them). It hurt, and I'm still sore from it a little bit now that it has been like 12 hours. However, even though it leaked, there was hardly any blood. WTF? It was supposed to be "regular" absorbancy.

I don't get these things. Is any of what I described normal?

IMO, they don't make tampons like they used to. In the good old days, before toxic shock syndrome became famous, they worked much better. I think once they took all the good chemicals out of them, they didn't work as well. I've had that happen many times, where they just didn't absorb, yet there was plenty of stuff that leaked that should have been absorbed.

Between that and the soreness from the cotton abrading tender skin, I've been much (MUCH) happier since I switched to the Diva cup.

Actually, I fell asleep on the couch the night before, or I would have taken it out before I went to sleep. Still, though, that's longer than I am comfortable with. I knew it would have ripped the sh out of me if I took it out sooner. I know about TSS.

I actually did look on the box before I put it in, but there were no directions!!!

I would never leave one in for more than 4-5 hours. And I never sleep with one in.

I think tampons just aren't for you. If you can't remove it easily every few hours, that's a problem. I would have a panic attack if I accidentally left one in for 24 hours.

24 hrs is nothing. I've gone to the doctor before for bleeding, odor, and a discharge after intercourse. He pulled out an old tampon. Wrote me a 'script for antibiotics and I was on my way. How did I forgot one? I'll never know. It happens.

If it was leaking but not full, you were probably using the wrong size/wrong absorbency for your flow.

I think that's how my mishap happened.

Over all the years that I've used them, sometimes i've left it in for 8-10 hours and it was no big deal. Sometimes you just can't get to it to change it and it's been okay.

I've never ever forgotten it's there though and put another one in, thank god. That's scary to me.

Totally depends on the brand. I can't use Tampax because the shape is all wrong (seems to drop and expand lengthwise, and leaks before absorbing). Actually, I don't particularly like any of the tampons with applicators -- it's too hard to get the position right. I only use o.b. (without the applicator) and have never had a leakage problem, even on heavy days, even when I leave one in for 8+ hours. I haven't bought pads in years.

I stopped using tampons for the very reason slinky described. They seemed to absorb somewhat, but I still had to use a small pad (not just a shield.) Why bother with the tampon, then? And, yes, removal of a mostly dry tampon was uncomfortable. I thought it was the result of changes after a couple babies, though. Never considered that the way the tampons are made now would be the reason. Interesting.

I'm allergic to something in them and can't use them at all. I used to, but once I went on the pill I didn't bleed enough to use them so I quit. Now that I'm off the pill I'd like to use them again but haven't had any luck finding one that I can use.

If you have a natural food store near you, you might be able to find 100% unbleached cotton tampons with no additives or chemicals. I've seen them at Whole Foods, but they're probably available at smaller stores, too.

I wondered if that was an option out there. I'll have to look next time I get to Whole Foods or the other one we have. My assumption was that there's something in the chemicals but at least this would be a way to find out for sure. Thanks!

I thought I was the only one! When I tried tampons, no matter what, I needed a pad. I stopped short of trying the biggest size because I didn't want to get to that point and just decided to give up the tampons. If I'm going to need a pad anyway, what's the point?
