Well, no offense curlylew, but if you didn't want to debate it, you probably shouldn't have brought it up. I mean, fair's fair.

The stuff you posted there seems to reinforce my positive opinion of them, not take away from it.
We can agree to disagree. If CR wants to know about my car then send a survey to me. The owner.
The way they gather the information doesn't set right with me. Anyone can pay them and rate two cars they have experience with.

But I own this car and unless I give them money for their magazine subscription I have no opinion.
Information should come from the registered owner of a vehicle.
Most cars have forums (like our curly board) where owners meet, inform each other of problems and what they like and dislike about their car.
I learned what to expect with my car and got useful information from other owners. Especially the little things that can happen with first year models.

I know many folks who believe in it.

Its totally fine if you don't trust CR. I would never take what they say as gospel without doing other research. I was even steered wrong by them back when I bought my VW Passat. They touted it as VWs first reliable car when it was new, then a couple years later the surveys started rolling in and other owners had the same problems I had.

What I had a problem with (and still do) is that you started out by saying twice that they are paid off by foreign car makers. When you were asked for more information, you posted three times about their survey methods. I still don't get what the connection is, and when I said that (third time now), you would not answer in plain English.

Again, that's fine. But hopefully you see why we're scratching our heads.

We don't know who is paying to leave the information.

They require payment or a "subscription" and you can leave reviews or ratings on two cars.
Now, that is where the problem is. Why does a person have to pay to leave a rating? And why would the owner pay to do this? I wouldn't. I bought the car. I have paid my money. If you want information come and get it. Why would I pay CR money for CR to make money? CR should be sending surveys to actual owners and then make the information available for potential buyers to purchase.
The ONLY people that should be paying CR is a potential buyer.
That is what people question. I understand if you don't see a problem with it but there are people out there that think their practice is a little backwards.
Most people that feel this way are automotive junkies and they use other resources anyway. Occasional car shoppers may not know how CR gets their info or don't care. But personally I don't think an anyone should pay CR to give their opinion.

Sorry you got burned by them saying a "new" VW was reliable. If it was "new" American they would have told you the opposite.
JUST KIDDING....no really they would have told you that

It's the R350. You don't see many around here either. We need something bigger, so we're looking now. We checked out two foreign cars and one American car this past weekend.

I think there's a bit of confusion between CR's reviews and their reliability ratings. The reliability ratings do come from subscribers, but the reviews don't.

I've found both the reviews and the reliability ratings to be pretty accurate.
