Depo Provera Users- Adult

Any one else ever get on the Shot? How did you feel about it?
Anyone have any horror stories/venting they want to do about it?

Other BC stories are welcome too! I'm interested if I'm in the minority with all the problems I've had over the years.

A friend of mine got Depo and proceeded to have a month's worth of heavy vaginal bleeding. That was pretty much enough for me to write it off as a possibility.

A few friends of mine have the Nuva Ring - most of them seem to love it.
"Well I love that dirty water. Oh, Boston, you're my home!"
I was on Depo for two years, gained 50lbs, and when I went off I was told it would take a year before my period came back.

28 days later, I started my period. But it was horrible. It was like I was hemorrhaging. It was like that for months.

I don't have to worry about bc anymore as the SO got fixed. But I still think I'm recovering from the effed up hormones from Depo.

I was on it for years and had no negative side effects whatsoever. My period completely disappeared, which was a plus (unfortunately it came back after I stopped the injections). I didn't gain any weight, and no major mood swings or other hormonal issues that I could see. Maybe I was just lucky?
My mom used it a while back. She didn't have the more common side effects but had hair loss and more frequent migraines.

I have never taken Depo myself, but I have given thousands of Depo shots. Depo is a love-it-or-hate-it drug. Most women do very well on it, with minimal side effects, but there are a fair few who do terrible, with heavy endless erratic bleeding for months and months. I don't have any scientific evidence to support it, just going by my own observations, but it seemed to me that the women who had the worst bleeding problems tended to be a bit on the fluffier side to begin with. Maybe that has something to do with the estrogen contained in fat cells or something, but moderate to low weight women tended to do better. There were exceptions on both sides, of course, but that's what I observed.

ETA: I don't think women who do well on Depo are "lucky". It's just that those who don't do well tend to complain loudly, especially on the internet. There are many more women who do well on it than not, but when something is working fine for someone, they don't tend to complain on message boards about it.
I was on it on and off for 10 years, the only real problem I has was with the people giving it.
Im with Battinlash. Ive never had any issues being on the depo. And im still on it. But for a medical reason and its helped alot! No periods , no mood swings, no gained weight either. People say its not good to be on it but i get check by my gyno once a year and im been just fine. This is the only thing has helped my issue and i was on the pill route but it just made me sick.
Edit: I been on it for 10 yrs and yes there is for brittle bones but i get checked for that and so far everything is fine. My dr told me to take calcium twice a day to help. Im a skinny person and im lucky i gained 5 lbs since i been on it but i also eat healthy too. Weird i never had even more hair anywhere sprout up but i guess ppl have diff reactions to BCs.

I used it for about a year. I didn't have any periods for several months, then I started getting erratic bleeding that would last for 1-2 weeks at a time and I didn't like that. I didn't gain weight, but the wonky periods made me quit.

I understand what you're saying about the people who experience the bad side effects complaining loudly.

I was curious if anyone had similar troubles to mine because I feel like I have never recovered from my hormones getting out of whack.

I had it done twice to treat endometriosis. It stings when it's done. I figured out how it worked as a contraceptive: It makes you zitty, moody and hairy so no man would want to go near you.

I didn't put on weight when I had it done (I'm quite slim) but was told I may end up with bigger boobs (they didn't get any bigger) but maybe that happens if you use it longer than 6 months, it also made me bleed/spot for 2 weeks every month. It took ages for my period to return afterwards. Also as there is oestoporosis in my family I didn't want to use it for too long. I refuse to go near it again.

I find the Pill much better. I have control over it which is something I didn't have with Depo and I didn't like that.
Fat does not make you fat. It's actually pretty important.

I was on Depo several years ago and hated it. It made me bleed erratically and for long periods of time... so it worked as BC for me because I wasn't going to be doing it while all that was going on. No weight gain that I remember or mood swings, just bleeding.

I also was on the Nuva Ring and that was about worthless because it came out a couple times during sex. My bf at the time was like "uh... I think this is yours." lol.

So now it's back to the pill for me. Even though I have to take it everyday I don't have any irregular bleeding or plastic things coming out of me that shouldn't.

Seeing the hell one of my friends went through on it was enough to deter me! She gained about 20lbs, had horrible acne, and was just plain mean most of the time.

I have stuck with the pill. I have had horrible luck with the Nuva Ring and any of the higher dose BC. The only ones I can take are 1/20.

Oh, I also forgot that my friend got terribly depressed.

She was a very lean woman as well, had a stereotypical runners body.

I was on Depo for 6 years. I suffered from breakthrough bleeding and spotting for the first 12 months. Then my period dissappeared for 5 years with no side effects. My doctor originally told me that there were no side effects (except for some erratic bleeding for some) but during my third year she had me go in for bone density testing. She said that "skinny white girls" were showing a tendancy toward major bone loss. I was fine, but when I started to explore the effects of hormone levels, I stopped taking it. It is a synthetic hormone and it took 18 months for my periods to regulate themselves again.

It's a choice. I choose not to use synthetic hormones in any way shape or form.
