Default Questions about honor killings

On NPR this morning, there was a story about women in Iraq being raped by police. One of the victims was later killed by family members in an honor killing. Which made me wonder, if family members are going to commit an honor killing, do they tell the victim first or just surprise her? Do they tell her good bye? Do they apologize? Do victims usually acquiece and accept their fate? It's such a foreign concept and a sad and unfair tradition.

I never saw the "honor" in honor killings. And aren't such killings usually done after the family member has done something to offend the family? Does Iraq still look at rape as the woman's fault? How can being a rape victim be seen as being worse than being a murderer?

I agree, there is no honor in murder, particularly when the victim is the one being killed. I would say assassination…

And it is true, unfortunately, that just as there have been felons impersonating Police/federal officers and/or agents, here, to assault innocent citizens, the phenomenon has spread to other parts of the world.

There's no sense in trying to rationalize it, because this isn't the type of thing that anyone with any sense of humanity could condone.

Also, I'm not sure if the rape victims are killed because it's looked at as their fault... a lot of times you hear about the woman being killed because after the rape she's no longer a virgin. Which, in countries that follow this practice, pretty much makes her a worthless outcast, and thereby shames the family.
