What he did is called "spoofing" or a "Joe job" and it's pretty easy to do. IT can pull the headers of the email and see the originating IP address.

Have you told HR that your ex is stalking you? Your job should be aware so if he tries something such as this again or something else, they are aware and won't automatically assume you are the culprit.

If your employer is going to fire you over this, they need to be darned sure you sent that email or face a lawsuit. It can definitely be tracked, both to prove you didn't send it and to prove the person you think sent it did.

I wouldn't wait for them to come to you. By that time, the damage to your reputation is done. I would go to HR now and ask them to look into this. I can't tell if your ex works at your company or not. If he does not, and he's harassing you, they can block emails from him. If he does work there, he should lose his job.

If this was all done on work computers, most likely there is an email trail, and IT can see that your co-worker forwarded the email to your ex-boyfriend, and you should be in the clear.

And this is why coworkers shouldn't date...it can get so messy when there is a breakup.

Well, if it helps, I think you'll be OK because 1) he quit. And that makes it look like he's trying to run from something; 2) At the same time he's claiming you sent him the email to cheat, he was the one receiving the "cheat sheet," so he'll look complicit in the wrongdoing, if they believe there is any, and; 3) an ex-employee forwarding a message from a former colleague (that at least some others in the office probably know he was dating) will look like sour grapes.

I'm glad it got taken care of with HR. I would consider letting your superviser know what's going on in case your ex shows up or tries to make trouble for you.

Did you end up getting a restraining order against him?

I had the exact same situation (aside from the email) but I had to meet with HR to let them know of potentials before they happened so that they had a head's up.
