Furniture rip-off..WWYD?

*I know this is completely boring but I need some advice.*

My husband and I decided to buy new living room furniture with our tax return, and after one long hellish day with two kids in tow going to serveral different furniture stores we decided on a particular couch and chair. We asked the man that helped us about their inventory, and he said their warehouse is out of those products at the moment but 12 would be coming in on the 21st (this was the 12th). He basically assured us that there would be no problem getting them, so we set up delivery for this Tuesday (the 24th) and paid for them. Today a representative from the store called to confirm delivery for ONLY the chair, they did not recieve the shipment of couches. I asked her when they would be in and she basically told me she doesn't know but maybe March 8th, two weeks from now. I told her we didn't want the chair without the couch so to cancel the delivery. I called another store of theirs to see if they had the couch in stock but apparently all the stores in this area are stocked from one warehouse, and that particular couch has "a gazillion" backorders, as the lady said. She couldn't even give me an idea of when it would be in either, but added that the other woman I talked to who told me it could be March 8th was wrong because they don't even receive shipments in that day.

So here I am, over $1200 out without my furniture or even an idea of when I'll get it. Needless to say, I'm P.O.ed. I know it's not completely the furniture stores fault, supposedly the manufacturer isn't sending them, but they had to have seen that there were "a gazillion" of them on backorder when I was ordering them, so I feel like we were misled. They did refund us the delivery charge of $89.99, but I feel that's the least they could do for not getting us the products we paid for by the time they said they could have them delivered.

I don't know what to do at this point. I don't know if I should just wait for them since they're already paid for and they refunded us the delivery charge, wait a particular amount of time for them and if they don't come in then look for something different, (But how long do I wait?), say F it and look for something different now, or something else. Is there something else I should be asking them or doing that I'm not thinking about?

I'm so disappointed. This is the first living room set we have bought ourselves and I was so excited to get exactly what I wanted instead of someone elses hand-me-downs. Our couch now is in terrible condition. What would you do?


This happened to me once. I ended up waiting almost 14 weeks for my furniture to arrive. Let me guess - you went to Ashley furniture?
I went through something similar when we ordered our computer parts. After that I wouldn't bother waiting too long. Personally I would have given up and got a refund when they gave me the 2nd possible delivery date. But that's me, my burn from the last incident hasn't completely healed.
That has happened to me several times over the years when buying furniture. Furniture manufacturers seem to work on "island time". It comes eventually. It's similar with carpeting. It's just how it is. Have patience. Your furniture will eventually show up.

Unfortunately, this is typical.

My sister has been waiting for her furniture since around Thanksgiving. (Yes, Ashley.)

Gee battinlash, you're good. We went to Roomful Express but the sofa and chair is made by Ashley.

I just got off the phone with a salesman from the store and he told me his best guess would be that we would get them by the middle of March. Of course he couldn't promise anything, nor would I expect him to. He said that there were 30 people on backorder in front of us and they got the couches that came in (which means that the lady who told me they didn't get the truck in lied to me.) We would be getting a couch and chair that comes in on the next truck, but they can't guarantee me when that will be.

UGH! I'm so tired of being ripped off by companies. We just went through a doozy with Verizon trying to get a new internet plan but that's for another thread.


I agree with RCW. In my experience, this is the way most furniture companies work. As frustrating as it can be, waiting 14 weeks for furniture to arrive is at the low end of the average. Your furniture will eventually arrive.

While I understand the frustration, I guess I don't understand the characterization of a "rip-off".
If I can't load it in my truck right then and there, they do not get my cash. Money talks bullcrap walks, I don't care what kind of deal and how much money I can save. You have my money I get my product, I'll take the display thank you very much and I want 20% off.

Not everyone wants furniture that hundreds of people have planted their butts on or had their dumb rugrat kids jumping on while shopping.
Since the furniture was out stock, I am surprised you had to pay the full amount. Usually, half is paid at the time of ordering the balance is paid once the furniture has arrived.

I had to wait 3 months for a chair...it was a long three months.

The same thing happened to me. The delivery guys showed up with most of my furniture, but not my dresser. It took a whole lot of phone calls to find out wtf happened. No one could tell me when I was getting the dresser. I think I had to wait a month, but it came. And I still had to pay full price, and nothing was refunded. But I was certainly peeved that no one said upfront that any of that was going to happen.

I would just wait for the furniture and file away the experience as something you'll know to ask about next time.

I understand about manufacturing issues, so I wouldn't suggest you ask for a refund YET, afterall they did refund you the delivery charge in order to keep your business. But I would suggest while you're waiting for your furniture that you continue to search if another store has the product that you want in-stock. If that happens to be the case, take your business elsewhere.
Sounds somewhat typical to me. Not a rip off, just bothersome and a pain.

I'm impressed that they refunded the delivery fee. Sounds like wherever you're shopping is full of poorly trained salespeople.

I used to work for a furniture store in customer service and I just want you to be aware that most of them have a policy that if you cancel your order after a certain period of time (it varies from state to state...in TX it's 48 hrs.), they get to keep a percentage of your money as a "restocking" fee (never mind that the furniture isn't in stock...). At the store I worked at, it was 20%. They sent you a certificate for the 20%. You can get a full refund, but be prepared to do battle with the store. Also keep in mind that most of the people in the store's customer service area are 18-21 year olds who have no idea what's going on and are too lazy to figure it out. I'm stunned they actually refunded your delivery fee, so this chain might be better than most.

As for the later date, stuff happens and furniture gets broken on the transport overseas all the time. It sucks, but it's par for the course. Also common is that stuff gets held up in customs for a while. It's a royal PITA.
