Hawaii

My mom hasn't been on a vacation since 1995, she just hasn't had any interest in traveling until now. Last night she told me she is really itching to get away. I'm thinking Mauii would be a relaxing place for both of us, but someone at work this morning said Mauii is more of a place for couples. Is this true? Can anyone give any resort recs? Will we need a car?

We just want to relax. Boat and helicopers rides, be lazy on the beach, eat a lot, shop, etc.
Yes, you will need a car on Maui. We loved it. We are a couple, but I don't think it's necessarily for "couples." If you are looking for young and nightlife, it's not the place to go. But if you are looking for a relaxed place where you and she could sightsee and shop, I would recommend it.

We did a search on line and I found a vacation condo in Kaanapli (something like that). We were very happy with it when we got there. But as I said, you will definitely need a car to get around. If you don't want to rent a car, I would say maybe check out someplace with a larger concentration of population, like Honolulu or Waikiki (have never been there myself).

I wanted to zipline when we were there. If you think you would like to do something that, book it on line before you go. I called once we were in Maui, and they said it would be over a week before they could get us in. I didn't call till after we had already been there a few days and we were leaving in about 5 so we were unable to do it.

My husband and I went for our honeymoon to Maui. I wouldn't say it's specific for couples. It really is just a nice and relaxing place.

And I second the idea that you should have a car. It's not hard to navigate around at all, and it's really convenient.

If you do go to Maui, DO NOT try to drive yourself down the Road to Hana. I recommend going, because it's beautiful, just don't drive it yourself. We learned the hard way that the trip should be taken in a tour bus.

From what you've listed, Maui sounds like the perfect place, and you'll definately need a car.
oh, I used to live in hawaii on oahu though. If the road to hana is that creepy one on the cliffs, I agree, do not take it! scary, scary, scary, doesn't even have a railing half the time! eek! (though I guess it is pretty if you aren't busy beign scared... -laughs- )

Other than that, if you're looking for relaxing, maui is much better than oahu, even though you'll need a car. Oahu is more "real world" with big buildings in the honolulu area, tons of homes, etc.
We drove the Road to Hana ourselves. I really didn't think it was that bad. Of course, we drove the road to Apache Junction (or something like that) outside of Phoenix which I thought was way way worse.

We did think about doing bikes down from the volcano, but after going up there in a car, I am so glad we didn't try it. It is one steep hill. I do recommend you drive to the top of the volcano. Breathtaking views.
