The Dixie Chicks: Not Ready to Make Nice
I was just watching this video and started thinking about the whole controversy with them and their Bush comment and wondered if they had made that comment nowadays (like in the last year) what the response would have been. Do you think that people would have hated on them as much? Do you think they would have received death threats and such? And do you think that the record burnings would have happened and their stuff pulled from radio stations? Past the heat of the emotional responses do you think that people may have regretted their reaction to the Dixie Chicks or would it have been the same?

Well it would be different since Bush isn't president now. The comment would in a different context completely. Btw, I LOVE that song.

I think they still would have been in trouble. Their fan base is the deep south...still Bush Country.

Oh okay, sorry missed that. Response wouldve been different, given the low approval rating of Bush and the support for Obama. I still think there would be a large backlash from bush supporters though.

That was so ridiculous when that happened.
I saw parts of that documentary awhile back and those mobs of people were messed up.
I think it would have been better received, I don't think people are so delusional now.

I think it's hard to say. Although bush's approval rating is low. I could see family rules of fighting applying here for some. It's one thing to talk bad about your brother to a few people, it's another a 'hole other ballpark to say it to international media.

Given the nature of the Country industry, I doubt it would make much difference.
While I thought the comments made were silly rather than interesting with good points, I supported their right to make comments, and mostly stopped listening to country at that time.

On second thought. I think a lot of that stuff would still go on. Locally I've seen bands banned for far less offenses.

I agree with RCW - their fan base is mostly (or at least was and is now coming back to) those same hardcore Bush fans, so I think the whole ridiculous blow-up would happen just the same, perhaps on a slightly smaller scale, but not by much.
Have I mentioned how ridiculous that was? Sheesh. If some musician disses President Obama, I'll think less of that musician, but I'm not gonna get all butt-hurt and make threatening phone calls like they just proclaimed their loyalty to Al Qaeda.
I remember when that video came out! The song has such amazing energy, it didn't even need controversy for me to be instantly and permanently addicted. My Republican friend doesn't believe this  but has no explanation for me also liking others of their songs, like "Goodbye Earl," that I looked up after hearing "Not Ready to Make Nice."
