Haven't been in quite a while. Used to be very nice, but I hear it's built up an awful lot around there in recent years, so may not be so nice any more. Haven't been to the panhandle at all in about 5 years.
Note: I meant Gulf shores, AL, not Gulf port, MS, although the latter probably has the seaweed/jellyfish/dead fish problem at times, too

thank goodness I am not the only one!! I live in Daytona, "the world's most famous beach" and DREAD summertime here! I'm a Jersey girl through and through - I like the cold! Even when I was a baby and we would visit FL, I would scream and scream. I have a theory that I had a past life that ended tragically in the water. Perhaps I was a victim on the Titanic? Either way, I always have to lug my own umbrella (nobody else uses it) lather up the suncreen, get under my towel, and read a book until we can finally leave. Ugh. Don't understand sun-worshiping AT ALL.

While not nearly as colorful as Hawaii's beaches, I love North Carolina's outer banks...gorgeous large sandy beaches, seldom any seaweed or jellyfish, and there are many areas that are completely deserted and you can drive on the beach. It's the ultimate in convenience to drive all our crap right to where we want to play. We can play with our dog offleash, fly our kites, collect some shells, with no crowds, and go home in a couple hours:

I understand what you mean. I like the beach overall but I don't like the ocean because it is really powerful and I've gotten knocked down by a wave one too many times. I love laying on a towel in the sand and getting drenched with heat and humidity. I wear tons of sunblock, but feeling the sun on my skin is one of the best feelings ever and makes a great nap setting. I tan a little from this. Also, frolicking on the sand while playing frisbee or something is fun too.
As for the snow, it's fun to play in (with the right outerwear) and just gorgeous to look at. It also smells nice when it snows. I hate the cold with the exception of snowy days.
Meryn, I want to be at the beach you posted so bad right now.

Once I get the house closed, I will extend an open invitation to all curlies for the House Warming Party. Hapuna is 15 minutes away... though I may stick a rake in your hands, the place is overrun with weeds.

I like the Outer Banks too. We used to go there when we visited our cousins -- they lived for a while in Wilmington and then Morehead City. Nice beaches.
But I am a sun avoider, so while I like the ocean, I am the one under the umbrella with a hat and sunscreen.

I could stand that beach for a couple hours. It's the grody Texas beaches that I dislike. A lot.

I went to Daytona once. Beautiful city, very friendly. Only time I've ever seen the ocean. I didn't really get to enjoy it much though. It was the late Feb/early March, so too cold for swimming. I did jump in once. With a 2 day drive just to get there, it'd be wrong not to.

I hate the beach because of the sand. Sand always seems to venture to restricted body areas. No matter what precautions I take i.e chair, blanket, I always find excess sand when it is time to change.

My problem is that I don't like being in water that I can't see the bottom & know what's in the water with me. I tried snorkeling when I was in Kaui & it made me very nervous. My daughter swam with a big turtle. I was sitting on the beach & one of the snorkelers started yelling and waving people over. He said there were some really big fish where he was at. I would have been swimming in the opposite direction. I also have a fear of sharks. I guess too many Jaws movies.

I want to go back, too. It was so beautiful. I really need to try the snorkeling again. My youngest granddaughter (turning 4 next month) & I are going to practice in the pool this Summer, so we can snorkel together.

I LOVE the ocean! The smells, the feel of warm sand beneath my feet, the sound of the waves, the beauty... It's pure sensory bliss!
But 2 things that ruin it for me: I am deathly afraid of the sun from getting burnt to a crisp so many times, so I make sure to use TONS of sunscreen. Shade is ideal.
I don't like crowds either so deserted beaches are awesome. I just like how all beaches are unique, so much to explore and see.
BUT what I really love are LAKES! I'm from Minnesota, so I grew up swimming in lakes and I still love it, although it's hard to find one that isn't polluted these days.

i love looking at the water, it relaxes me. but i hate having dirty feet, so wet sandy feet? AUGHHHHHHH!!!!!
and i'm sun sensitive. i can only sit in direct sun for a few minutes. all in all, i go, but i need to be protected - i put a towel over my never see the sun thighs - keep my toes out of the wet sand, don't go in the water, and i'm good.
