feta cheese...
 
I love feta. Period. But i'm currently watching what i put in my mouth.. so i need to know how bad is this for me? Or how much i can consume and get away with it..

Dude, it's just cheese. If you like it, eat it. It's got lovely protein and calcium. It's hard to eat too much protein...it's the other stuff (simple/processed carbs) you eat that puts on weight.

This is my fav cheese in salads. I only add a little bit, so I don't worry about the calories, etc. Moderation is the key. A cup has a lot of calories, but you don't need a cup in your salads. Just a sprinkle on the top.

You'd watch out for it the way you would other cheese. So, if you're watching cholesterol and saturated fat, cheese of any kind is something to control.
If this is about sodium, there are different types of feta. French feta is usually less salty, as are some types found in places like farmers' markets.

Since feta is such a strong flavor, I wouldn't worry. I know that in weight watchers 1/8 cup is one point - usually plenty for a salad.

OK I need to Delurk to comment on this because I just died a little inside. TOO MANY CARBS DOES NOT PUT ON WEIGHT!!! THis is a HUGE myth, too many calories PERIOD causing a positive energy balance (More energy intake than output) is what causes weight gain PERIOD. Carbs includes things like Veggies, Fruits, Brown Rice etc. You eat a low Carb diet you will get dehydrated, lose muscle mass (due to the need to get glycogen from somewhere which causes your body to look for it in your muscles) and possibly cause a condition called ketoacidosis. It IS possible to get too much protein and when you have exceeded your limit it gets stored as fat since you don't store protein, excess protein does NOT turn into muscle mass. I wouldn't worry about consuming too much just stay away from protein supplements. Carbs should be 45-65% of your daily intake of calories. Any less than this and I guarantee you will feel sluggish/tired and will not be able to work out to your full extent. Sigh, that is all. Can you tell I just finished Nutritional sciences midterms.

Enjoy your feta. Like others have said, it's only a smattering that you'd put on salads anyway. There is a fat free variety too that tastes great IMO, but if you have an aversion to fat free then the good stuff in moderation shouldn't sabotage your diet.

I have no helpful advice to add, I just saw the title and HAD to run in here. LOL I love some feta cheese! *drools just thinking about it* Feta and spinach pizza is the best thing in the world to me. ....d@mn, now I'm hungry. lol

I have a really great quickbread recipe with feta, tomatoes, and basil (it is in no way good for you as it also has a little oil, heavy cream, and a little sugar). Want me to post it? It is super easy and sooooo good.

Love feta, and it's the only cheese I don't mind in the fat-free version.

I was just going to say this. Yeah, on the WW points list, this is the lowest. I mean, don't go nuts with it, but it's probably one of the more diet friendly cheeses.

I love feta cheese omelets...used to get them at the diners up north...miss 'em...feta is my preferred salad cheese, too...any recipes are very welcome!

ETA: I LOVE FETA CHEESE. I don't grasp the moderation thing at all, must work on that . . . .

Sun Dried Tomato Quick Bread from Paula Deen

1 3/4 C all purp flour
1 C feta cheese
1/4 C chopped fresh basil (FRESH!)
1/4 C chopped sun dried tomatoes packed in oil
3 T sugar
2 1/2 t baking powder
1/2 t salt
1 large egg, lightly beaten
3/4 C whipping cream
1/3 C sun dried tomato oil

Preheat oven to 400.
Lightly grease a 9x 5 loaf pan.

In a large bowl, combine flour, feta, basil, tomatoes, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

In another large bowl, beat together egg, cream, and oil.

Stir the flour mixture into the egg mixture until just moistened.

Pour batter into prepared pan.

Bake for 35 minutes or until a tooth pick inserted in center coems out clean.

Cool in pan for ten minutes then remove to wire rack.

Then there is some nonsense about letting it cool completely but who does that? Bread is supposed to be eaten warm. With butter. Humph.

I made this a few years ago for a Christmas brunch and it didn't last ten minutes. Now I make at least two. Big hit. Do not try to sub anything to reduce the fat or calories, you'll ruin it.
