It's G.D. awful. There was recently a story of a guy who burned to death in one near my home.

And Texas has the highest rate of homeless children (story here). I can only imagine what life must be like for those who can't stay the night in a shelter or on a friend's couch.

At our food bank we're asking people to donate food with pop-top lids because not everyone has access to a stove to cook stuff.

The sad thing is I didn't even know about these tent "cities" until my friend was telling me about a fundraiser she is doing for them. She's calling it "Pitching in for tent cities- Say NO to 3rd world America!".

I imagine some of those hardy/chunky/homestyle canned soups with the pull top lids would be good. I see them on sale for a dollar and change all the time. Some of those are good and filling. Some of them probably wouldn't taste bad cold.

If you choose to donate food, please choose healthy, low sodium foods. So many of those needing food are seniors on fixed income, or people with pre-existing health problems because they could not afford preventative care or basic health care. I do not know the stats on seniors that are homeless, but I'm willing to bet that if you're homeless, you probably don't have health care (and yea, TX is #1 in failing to provide that too)

Ideally, it's best to donate money. We can purchase a lot more with $5 than the average consumer can - unless your name is Mr. Walmart.
