Poll: war or peace

I have a big question and I think it's entitled to its own thread. It is conceptual and it's not about war in Iraq.

Do you believe that peace is the answer. Only love can conquer hate? By leading with peace, the world will follow slowly?

Do you believe that war is a necessary evil? While it's sad, there is often no other choice? The end justifies the means?

At times such as ethnic cleansing, I would rather we step in than not, even at the risk of the brave folks volunteering for our military.

I'm somewhere in between. Peace isn't always the answer-- for instance I believe that WWII was a justified war.

But war isn't always the answer, either-- Iraq, for instance.

I believe that humans are animals and complex enough animals to have ideas and desires. That these 2 things are raw enough that they will always have differences and nature's "Survival of the Fittest" will in someway always play out.

I believe war is our unfortunate reality of the human race.

I believe that sometimes there is no other choice.

I do not equate that with the ends justify the means, though. The latter is too broad for my taste.

I would love to be able to say that I believe peace would do the trick, but I canít. Sometimes war is a necessary evil (I am NOT referring to Iraq). Just imagine, what would the world be like without both World Wars?

Too many shades of gray for me. Ideally peace, but, reality kicks in. Like NetG mentioned, how do you stop ethnic cleansing without war?
These fundamental beliefs are really ingrained in us. It's really interesting to see how people are divided completely on the issue.
I think these poll results are sad. I voted peace.

However, I don't think we are in the right stage of human development for this to be a realistic goal.

I do believe wholeheartedly that we have the capacity to achieve this reality.

And that the only thing standing in our way is our underestimation of our own abilities.

ETA: people cite WWI and II as an example of why war is necessary. I guess in the way I see it, our development as humans would reach such an advanced level that the events that lead to those wars wouldn't be happening in the first place.

We are not the creatures we used to be, we are constantly growing an evolving. Unless we exterminate ourselves first [very possible], we'll get there. And the rate of our growth and development is accelerating.
It would be wonderful if peace and love did it. It doesn't. As long as there are evil people in this world, war is inevitable... A necessary evil. Imagine the world if there had been no wars....

Everyone mentions WWII but America would not even be a country had it not been for war. Sometimes there's no way to avoid it and all the love in the world won't fix it.

Unfortunately though, I have to disagree that while "we" have the capacity to achieve this reality, there are lots of other things standing in our way besides underestimation of ourselves...
It's stunning how people lack imagination, hope and perspective.

History is long people, long! Take a step back.

Peace is a very great thing, something we should strive for I would agree... But it will only work in a perfect world full of perfect people. That's sad, yes, but true.
