If you'd like a cheap but pretty good kabuki I've heard raves about the "bronzer brush" sold at Target. It's not the Sonia Kashuk line but another brand, Studio Tools and looks just like a kabuki but larger and fuller than the EM baby kabuki. If you can access it here's a pic of it:

Plus it's only $3.

I've been using this every day for a while, and although it covers my blotchy, rashy skin well, and doesn't irritate it as much as traditional makeup, I still don't know what to think of it. I have a real oil problem in a circular area in the center of my face and I don't think there is anything I could do outside of going on a super-strict diet that would stop it. Anyway, my makeup always ends up looking crappy there. Plus, I have some fine lines around my eyes (I'm 26...I blame the Almay Amazing Lasting concealer that I was using for years...I think it dried the hell out of that area...but it never slid during the day like everything else!), so the BE can't look perfect there, either, especially if I'm not careful how much I use.

I've found that the best BE brushes for me are the flat ones...they market them as full coverage and concealing brushes, and there are three sizes. I can use the middle sized one to do almost my whole face...Even though it is small, I like the control, coverage, and how it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin like the fluffier brushes. I also really like the baby buki.
I got my EM yesterday so here' s my own take. It came wrapped up in a very cute little blue box and since we all know that half the fun of makeup is the buying experience this was a nice touch.

I loved the coverage and feel of the foundation as well as all of the colors (I received blush & eyeshadow colors in the kit I ordered). It was really smooth and wore pretty well all day yesterday with the damp method of application. The dusting powder (their MV equivalent) is definitely worthy of all the raves I've read. It's finer than MV and really doesn't change the color of the foundation on your skin. It jus finishes the look and sets everything. The semi-matte foundation is not shiny at all. That was a plus.

Having said that the foundation I purchased, medium tan is supposed to be a match to BE's 5.2 medium tan (which I'm wearing here) but in the EM formula came out much darker and ruddy. Also, while the blush and shadow colors were lovely (and did live up to the claim that some can be worn as lip colors) they work for a fairer person than me. On me (because of my deeper skin and yellow undertones) they had an ashy base to them until my breakthrough oil appeared later in the day.

So, I've contacted Rhonda at Barefaced Minerals for color suggestions on her velvet plush/velvet glove foundation as well as colors. I've ordered some samples that should arrive next week and since she has a wide range of colors that includes some very deep vibrant tones I hope to have found a few good basic colors for an everyday look. Will keep you posted. Also she'll custom mix foundation colors if I can't find a match. If you're curious here's her site:

Hey, marielle, thanks for the rec on the Target brush - I'll be checking that out later this week.

Sorry the EM didn't work out for you. That stinks.

Marielle, I just glanced at the bareFaced Minerals site - their eyeshadows are incredible! Amazing colors, and they look so rich!

I ordered the Everyday Minerals free sample kit and so far I'm liking it. I like Bare Minerals, but was looking for a less expensive option (thanks for the rec, fellow curlies!).

For anyone who's ordered the full-size Everyday Minerals products, do the jars have sifter screens like Bare Minerals? The samples don't, and I'm having a heck of a time not spilling the darned stuff when I'm transferring it to the lid (it's hard enough WITH the sifter screen, let alone w/o it!).

Also, I read this on the Everyday Minerals "blog" -- sounds promising:

Our new EM Intensive Foundation Line will not only give you that same wonderful texture and flawless look you love from Everyday Minerals Flawless, but also provide an extra boost of coverage and protection for those that need it most.

With a formulation unique to Everyday Minerals, your new Intensive Foundation Line matches your skinís own natural light diffusing properties, thus helping your skin look and feel smoother and more natural. With all natural skin rejuvenation properties like Allantoin and safe and effective antioxidant and age-defying ingredients like Phyllanthus Embilca, your this mineral makeup foundation will be the first line of defense when it comes to fighting the effects of pre-mature aging.

With a unique finish that is between our Flawless Semi-Matte and Matte lines, you will find all the qualities of what you love about Everyday Minerals foundations but with added coverage and protection where you need it most. So once again thanks so much for all the great ideas!

EM Intensive is designed to work in unison with your Original Glo, Semi-Matte, and Matte formulas. The most important part in developing this line was to keep it looking natural while providing extra coverage for those with problematic skin.

So please keep an eye out your new exclusive mineral foundation line to be available in early to mid-July!
I've been using BE for a couple of weeks now, and I haven't really noticed much difference in the way my face looks before and after I put it on. I tried the Fair and Fairly Light foundations, and my skin looked exactly the same. Maybe I'm not using enough, or I screwed up the buffing? I don't know. The concealer works pretty well, though.

I do like how easy it is to apply, it doesn't clog my pores, and it gives my face some protection from the sun. So it's still better than the liquid-to-powder stuff I was using.

Thanks marielle448! Looks like I'm an EM convert now (I also love how the matte finish foundation controls oil all day)!
I also like the EM foundation a bit better than my BE. It doesn't seem like it's as heavy. That could be in the way that I apply it, though. I am using the same BE brushes, too.

I might order more of the foundation. Their "Fairly Light" tends to match my skin better than the BE colors, too.
I got Pur Minerals last week (I know I said Pro Minerals. . . my mistake). I have to say I really like it. What I like is that it doesn't feel heavy by the end of a hot summer day, and it conceals great. My niece got some too and loves it. My sister got some and isn't crazy about it. . . she was a different color than the two of us and has a lot of ruddiness to her complexion.

My mom has been wanting to try BE for awhile but she was nervous to spend the money on colors that might not work for her. I just ordered the EM samples for her. I hope she likes them! I also ordered a brush for her because they were so cheap... even cheaper than CVS, I think.

I am kind of hoping she'll want the full size foundation so I have an excuse to get an eyeshadow for myself.
2C/3A -- wurly!
Thanks to this thread I had to go out and try a m,ineral product. I bought Physician's Formula. It says mineral powder, but on the package it says it can be used like a foundation. It does not contain talc so I'm not sure what difference that makes, but I liked it. It has good coverage and it definitely reduced the redness I have from rosecea on my cheeks. I was very impressed by that. However, the color seemed a little yellow to me. I have relatively fair skin, but sometimes fair or light is too light, so I tried natural which is in the middle of their color range, but it didn't seem quite right. On the plus side, it wears really well, stayed smooth, and was relatively inexpensive at $9. I'm going to order the EM sample kit, so thanks for the info on that everyone!
I have 3A hair. I've discovered Jessicurl shampoo and Too Shea conditioner and I'm thrilled! Long-time LA Looks sport gel user.
i've tried a lot of different mineral foundation brands,
and here is my take on it:

bareMinerals = crappy shiny stuff that makes me look like a disco ball

anything in a drugstore = either contains chemicals, or is processed using chemicals (this includes "physicians formula", etc.) which all cause breakouts, redness, etc.

best 3 i've found: (they're all very reasonably priced)

monave.com

I use BareMinerals and I really like it. I bought a starter kit at Ulta for about $45.
I have had the wost time trying to find the right colored foundation! I even had a "color match" done by a Mary Kay consultant and the color was too dark and way too yellow. BE is the first foundation I have found that actually matches my skin color.

Here are some things that I love about my BE foundation:
I can put it on and forget about it
It dims but doesn't hide the redness of my cheeks (no need for blush)
If I put it on my lips before lipstick, it makes my lip color last four times as long (even four times as long as when I would use lipliner)
I don't have to use eyeshadow with it
It doesn't make me itch
It doesn't make me break-out
It has some sun protection (but nowhere near enough for me)
I don't have to use concealer first (but if I got concealer as a gift, I would use it)

But, I still can't wear makeup in the summer.
I'm a 2something/3something. Started modified CG routine on 6/6/05
Cut more than ten inches from my BSL hair on 8-10-05 and growing it long again
But we're STILL adjusting.
