Good for you! I don't think anyone can tell you what you're "supposed" to check. If you want to honor both parts of your ancestory and therefore say "other", there's certainly nothin' wrong with that Who cares what people think you're supposed to be or are?

im multi racial so typically i check "other". im probably supposed to check the black or african american box, but considering that my skin isnt black and i dont know any africans in my family or even if that is how the first ancestor from my family arrived in america, i dont feel like i should check that one.
plus im an 1/8th american indian on my moms side and im not too sure what the breakdown is on my dads side but its there.
not to mention my english and irish heritage...
see why i have anxiety attacks when i see the "check one" box????

for the record, i'm african-american/white and i usually check the "other" box. i also check "black" at times if i feel like it. as long as you're checking the box that you want to be checking and you're not doing it b/c you feel like you SHOULD be, i think it's fine. we multiracials have the luxury of checking whatever we want to check. if the system doesn't cater to our needs, then it's their problem, not ours.

So few votes for black, I guess all the black posters really have left or the sisters are frontin up in here.
Holla! Where my gurlz at?
Seriously, I always check other and write in human being b/c I'm anti-racial like that.

Now many of the surveys tell you to "check all that apply" so I check black and white. If that is not an option (check ONE), lately I've just been leaving it blank.

I often leave it blank or select other.
Now, it's most often "Caucasian" but used to be "Anglo" and I am not Anglo. However, I am now supposed to be checking Caucasian. Historically, the definition of Caucasian included straight hair, so I don't fit that. Since they-who-make-surveys can't decide if I should fit in their term for white of the week, I tend to resist putting that. White fits best, though I've definitely had people tell me I'm not white because I'm Jewish.

I have 16 nationalities that can be traced without getting crazy and going too far back. Why would you not be white if you're jewish? I am both (and anglo and irish and russian and hungarian and scottish and native american...) - I have really fair skin, so nobody could say I'm not white! lol
I'm weird: If I wear red the tones around my eyes come out and I look like I "just got off the boat from Russia". (quote from someone who shall remain nameless) If I wear blue, I'm a dark-haired, light-eyed all-american girl. Go fig.

I check white. I'm 1/16 native American on my dad's side, but it isn't part of what makes me me. Culturally I'm Western-Euro-mutt, so I check "white".

Of all those boxes, white fits me best; although sometimes in the dead of summer I feel like I should check other.

White girl here. All my ancestors are Western European... I've got some British, Scotch, Irish, German, and a tiny bit of French... which makes me, as others have said, pasty white.

I like that.
I'm Black, Cape Verdean, Blackfoot, French Canadian, a dabble of Scottish, English and Irish, Cherokee and some other Native American that I can never remember.
I identify myself as a black woman but this whole race thing really does annoy me. Sometimes I do check everything just to piss them off.

Me, too. Or if people ask me my ethnicity sometimes I'll say biracial, but sometimes I'll say black to save time.

No clue.
As I was saying, I've had people tell me that. I don't get it. But I'm definitely not Anglo, and don't fit the original meaning of Caucasian. I'd say I'm white.

It's a big part of the KKK movement stuff. They want to keep the aryan race "pure" and limit it to blue eyed blonds, preferably. It's neo-nazism, except it's not that neo. The people who call Jews non-white say the same thing to Italians, I think, but I'm not sure.
Frankly, I think that categorizing people based on race is very unsophisticated. (This isn't directed at the OP, just generally.) Caring about skin color is so...slave era. Now that it's the new millenium and we're learning to respect people's differences, you'd think we would move on to describing ourselves by our cultural affiliation. It's just inaccurate and now that we have more specific ways of describing people, it seems archaic.
When you use color, you lump Carribeans in with Africans in with African Americans and we're all very different. You lump in the Dutch with the Irish and the Greek and they're very different, too. Oh well. It's a topic for another thread.
