Are Black people particularly intimidating?

That seriously makes zero sense. And thats sad.

this is not a logical thought out rational reaction. AG 13 had the right of it. It is a fear that is taught and nurtured in the most insidious ways. Children listen to conversation, pay attention to what makes their parents nervous, see and hear their parents reactions to situations. They internalize their parents fear and it becomes their own without ever having been rooted in reality. Most of them have never even spent an meaningful time in the company of regular ole black people.
She was raised in Cuba around Black Cubans so to her black Hispanics are "safe" I've introduced her to some of my friends once she gets to know them she is very nice. I'm trying to get her to see that a nice black man in not anomaly.

I'll get there, eventually. I just have to undo about 40 years of the crazy ideas her mom and Fidel with their "Evil Americans" thoughts passed on to her.

2nd the "WTF?!" response.

But I have to say, I've been around groups of White Men and Black Men, and I'd have to say that the White Men were more intimidating because they acted like and felt like they could get away with whatever.

Most "big black dudes" that I know feel uncomfortable around women because they know that some women find them intimidating just because of their size and color even if they work in an office and have never committed a crime or hurt anyone in their lives. Plus they know if somebody screams, the first person they're gonna look at is him.
Will this thread get any replies? I'm curious about this and know it could get heated. But that's not why I'm asking. If you don't want to post, please
just respond to the poll.

I ask because when people (usually White) have described situations in which one person is intimidating another, they seem to make a point of saying when one of the people is Black.

For example, they'll say, "This big Black dude [read: really intimidating/scary person] came in and..." Is "Black" here just part of the description or is it integral to the story?

I was talking to someone today and she was recalling a case where someone (Person A) got smart with Person B on the phone, not knowing who she was talking to of course. She went on to say, about Person B, "In came this big Black woman" who was mad and put her finger in Person A's face. Person A didn't get smart with her anymore.

Can we discuss this honestly yet be chill about it? Doubt it, but I still wanna know if my take is correct or if I'm just over-sensitive to the subject.

We had a race talk in for my dorm area when I was in school. A few white students felt intimidated by the black students because we looked at them when they entered a room. Usually ANYTIME someone enters a room people look, but b/c it was done by blacks, it made them nervous. We were COLLEGE students at a pretty good school, but still scary

For real? I think a person would have to be pretty damn sheltered to think that way.... This genuinely puzzles me.

Even if you live in an area that is not particularly homogenized racially, media, culture, music, sports, politics and on and on and on - people should surely be desensitized to skin color variables.

Intimidation is intimidation. It's all about the person's attitude and the way they carry themselves. Colour doesn't come into it.

I'm aware of the stereotype that black women are more bold/assertive than women of other races, but not intimidating. Jewish women are similarly stereotyped so I'm used to the stereotype being applied to me. It's not true of either group from my experience.

I'm intimidated by people in general because as a small, quiet, young woman I feel like I'm more likely to be taken advantage of. I've had a lot of instances of bullying from middle-aged women for some reason. Like my latest: I was in line at Wendy's (located inside a hospital). I moved over to the right side to wait on my order and the cashier had two sacks out and pushed one my way. I assumed it was mine because there was only one other person waiting there with me (I didn't notice 2 men waiting at the far left side). I peeked in it to check and the cashier grabbed it and told me to wait at the far left with the 2 men. I did and she called out bacon cheeseburger, which is what I ordered, so I came up and she goes "Honey!!" all exasperated-like. I say, "I thought you said, bacon cheeseburger." (I swear that is what she said and no else came forward). She barked, "I did not!!" I move back to wait. The other people plus 1 or 2 new orders get served and another cashier notices that I've been waiting for awhile and asks what I ordered. It had been up there the whole time. I was so mad about that, to be treated that way, especially in a hospital (and while my dad was getting treated for cancer so I wasn't in the best mood anyway).

She was a black, middle-aged woman, though I never thought to attach race to the situation (I'm trying to get this back on topic somehow). I've been pushed around similarly before (a lot of the time by middle-aged women of all races) and always wonder if it has something to do with my size and/or demeanor. I mention this situation because, it's funny, I posted it on another board and someone said, "Was she black? Don't worry about it, black women are that way." I didn't even know how to respond to that!

I've never heard anything about black people being intimidating, only the stereotype about black women being more bold/assertive than other women.

lots of white folks are physically intimidated by black folks for a whole host of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with us. the purse clutching, window rolling, crossing the street when they see someone black is not a favorite joke for black comedians for nothing.
