Yes, of course there are physically ugly people. Lots of them. And no, I don't believe the inside has anything to do with the outside. One can be kind, loving, generous, friendly and sweet and be ass ugly.

agreed. now, someone like this may seem more attractive based on the inner traits (with a certain glow or appeal that people close to them see), but, physically? that doesn't change, even though perception might.

I have seen enough makeover shows to believe that anyone can be reasonably attractive with the right hair, makeup, and clothing. Grooming goes a long way.

I've learned that physical beauty is so subjective. What one person thinks is ugly is what another thinks is beautiful. I personally have no reason to go around calling people ugly when someone could very well think the same thing about me.

Re: All this talk about beauty...What about the ugly people?
I agree. Arrogance can totally change the way a person looks, IMO. When I pick up that someone is conceited or arrogant, I zoom in on their flaws and have a hard time seeing past that.
At the same time, if a person is so/so but has a great personality, that makes them really attractive to me.

On the physical note, I can see where a person can definitely look ugly. There are ugly-looking people out there, just as there are tall, short, slim, fat people. It doesn’t matter that someone might look at you and think the same thing, that’s besides the point. It just is. To look at someone and not find them attractive or good-looking, or simply very hard to look at isn’t in and of itself a bad thing, I think.
I think things get “ugly” when you decide that someone is beautiful/ugly based on race, or treat such persons with disdain based on their looks. That said, a pleasing personality will win me over every time, ugly or not.

But that's my point. What defines UGLY? Just because YOU (generally speaking) think someone is ugly it makes them ugly?
I think this is a very interesting subject.

True, and I think that’s why we have a problem with it. If we can say beautiful, we should be able to say ugly too. I understand your unease.

I think it's interesting also. I think it's one of those "If a tree falls and nobody's around to hear..." type things. It all depends on what you consider reality.
I think beauty and ugly exist because we can recognize (sp?) it. I think the fact that I (or anyone else) can look at something and think "Ugly" says that it exist. We wouldn't know ugly when we saw it if it wasn't real. And I think the fact that you can't be taught what ugly is (because it's relative) but we can see it anyway shows that it's natural to find things unappealing.
And ugly is an ugly word and I can't believe I'm using so much brain power to analyze it. But it's very interesting to think about.
