Its a woman, no wait...it's a man?

I just ventured to this area of the board for the first time. WOW.. it can get hot in here

Anyway, regarding the OP. I feel very sad for the athlete in question, it is obvious from her birthcertificate that she is a woman in her mind. I can't imagine what it would be like to have your gender be questioned. Yes, I do understand why it is important for them to know that she is "female" as far as competing against other females. Men run faster then woman, so she would have an advantage if she is infact intersexed and has the hormones to give her that advantage.

on the guano side of this post, I'm part native american and would prefer to be referred to as native american indian... but I wouldn't be offended no matter how it was said. I think it's all in the way things are said, not necessarily the actual words
And the chyna picture, yes i'm nosey and clicked. To me it does look like a small penis, but a circumcised one at that? I have five son's, I've seen small little tally wackers with foreskin and without, and if that is a penis that it was circumcised at one point. I admittidly do not know a whole lot about intersexed biology but could it be that Chyna had reassignment surgery and chose to keep her penis for pleasure purposes? I'm terribly sorry if that sounds like a really stupid question, I have no idea about this stuff.
Good to see you using your standby tactic again, Red. Miscontrue someone's argument and then criticize the new (but not improved) version. A sign you're running outta ammo. Good times.

And yes I did see you quoted CM. But thankfully I was able to skip right over the post after I saw her name.

One big issue I see with hemaphrodite is that it is a noun - whereas intersex is an adjective. Many groups object to being described as only one characteristic (midget, retard, hermaphrodite, ***, cripple) and prefer terms that recognize that they are first a PERSON. As in "little person", "intersexed person", "person with disabilities" etc.

But I guess since pc is not necessary, we should all feel free to call Phoenix the N-word and use whatever slurs we feel like.

Love to see how that will work out for ya. Not to mention, that's more than just being not PC. But if you want to minimize your comments to make mine look even worse, yes, feel free. I'm not sure when hermaphrodite became a "slur."If you really think your comparison is the same, then you've shown your true colors.

In fact I encourage you to address someone as a hermaphrodite face-to-face. Then call a Black person a n*gger. Please report back to us once you recover from that one.

Irrelevant.

Actually, I haven't really "persisted." I used the word once or maybe a few times and have spent the next several posts explaining it. So, once again, you've misrepresented facts. And, AGAIN, where is this offended person? Most of you are just assuming it's offensive when you aren't even sure if that's the case.

I SAID it wasn't intended as a slur and no one seems to know if it really is one. Yet, all of you who disagree have intentionally been offensive, acting as if it's somehow equivalent.

You're offensive to pretty much everyone equally, Red. However, you bristle when someone potentially offends a group you've chosen to like. So no one can be offended unless you're doing the offending? Um, K.

You happily show your penchant for offending people in your signature. You quote my statement, "I don't believe in homosexuality" as if I should be ashamed or as if you're outing me. AND you use my previous screen name just as another dig.

Like I said before, so much for letting people believe what they want. You don't believe that. Despite your claims that you don't really care what people believe as long as they don't infringe on your rights, you don't really "live and let live" yourself. You're just another kind of proselytizer.

I'm just wondering aloud (since I'm on ignore because I have a differing view and I don't exist??): if someone doesn't believe in homosexuality? What does that mean?

Am I real? Do I exist? Am I lying about being a lesbian?

I don't understand what a person means when they say that. It just sounds stupid (to me. A homosexual. Believe or not, I'm here!!! And queer!)

And RCW - I support you and your liberal support.

On the original topic: has any more come out about Caster, or are tests still going on?

On Chyna: I have no idea who she is, but were all the 'Eww, Chyna has boy germs!'-esque comments really necessary? Like, if someone had a less than average looking face, it would be horrifically offensive to express disgust at their appearance...but because it's her genitals, it's ok to be grossed out or laugh?
Even so, that pic looks a LOT like it's been photoshopped.

On the guano: Phoenix, I don't think it's that the term hermaphrodite is particularly negative in connotation (like the n word), but rather that's inaccurate, and not bothering to change your terminology implies that you don't care enough about this group to be specific. To use another example, I am a Sri-Lankan but I am often (understandably) thought to be an Indian. Being called an Indian is not offensive in any way, but to be repeatedly called the wrong nationality even AFTER I've corrected the misconception makes me feel like the issue has been dismissed by the person as not being important enough to be reconsidered. Kind of like the whole 'all asians look the same' thing...there IS a difference, even if you aren't familiar enough with the topic to notice it.

That said, I don't see why your religion had to be dragged into this, and RCW, I'd appreciate it if you didn't start on the insulting generalisations like "science doesn't mean much to that crowd" and the bizarre dinosaur theories. A lot of us Christians are actually quite rational, although I can understand your frustration at the topic at hand.

The term hermaphrodite has been used to describe humans who are have genitalia that are ambiguous, but this isn't a correct usage.
My initial statement on the matter was that I didn't think hermaphrodites could have kids. I was corrected that intersex is the right term. That suggested that hermaphrodite is incorrect in all instances. But the quote just above suggests otherwise.

I checked out the Intersex Society's web site and even there some people say they prefer the term hermaphrodite or feel it's the best way to describe them.

Re: your Sri Lankan analogy, again, I think it would be different if I kept referring to a specific person as a hermaphrodite when they preferred other terminology. But I used the term once or so and have spent the rest of my time on this thread explaining why.

As for saying I must feel the group in question isn't important enough to adjust my actions, again point taken.

This topic is getting WAYYYYYYYY off track.

ITA with Amda about the term being inaccurate. It's like calling EVERY black person African America (event the ones not from the USA)

It appears that hermaphrodite is antiquated term. In the animal world, the term is used because it it clear that they have both (and that is a part of their make-up). In humans, the actual circumstances can vary (not true hermaphrodite) so therefore the term intersexed is used.

Since changes are won't know their exact circumstances, intersexed seems like the way to go
