I deleted the poster's username when I quoted this, because I didn't want to single her out for a sentiment that appears throughout this thread.

I know that I don't need to keep reading this thread. But the amount of prejudice in this thread (and yes, this is a very serious form of prejudice) is shocking and depressing. It's very useful to have a standard dialect for formal communication with people of different regions and background. And because of that, it's very helpful to be able to communicate in that standard dialect, when necessary. But I really can't believe that people think that those who speak a stigmatized dialect are lazy and apathetic! Standard English is not intrinsically better than other dialects. It just has higher cultural status.

The idea that anything short of Yoda-speech is "incorrect," rather than non-standard, is mindboggling.

Also, my internet connection is incredibly slow today and I'm really hoping that no one quoted this before I edited it
I don't mind being outed on this one.

I expect an adult to have better grammar than what was taught in 3rd grade English. If that makes me a prejudiced b1tch, then oh well.

You happened to stumble onto what may be my biggest super-duper Sensitive Issue, on a day that I had the free time to type all that. I absolutely mean every word that I wrote. But I mean it in a, "What the heck, I can type, I'll go for it" kind of way. Not in a, "I must stop this thread!!!" kind of way.

But seriously, you are making baby angels weep.

Fortunately, I'm not all that religious.
