This is a weird question, but hey, who knows...

So you may remember that my cat has been sick lately...she suddenly developed liver problems, and the vet doesn't know why (without exploratory surgery).

Anyway, we've been giving her IV fluids every day for like 2 weeks now, force feeding her, giving her antibiotics twice a day, etc., and she actually seems to be taking a turn for the better (though they still don't know what the cause of her sudden liver failure was).

So my question is this--I was giving her her IV fluids tonight, and I was trying to get the used needle off the IV so I could put a clean needle on, and I stabbed myself in the finger with the used needle.

Is this bad? Obviously sharing needles with humans is undesirable...is it the same if it was in your cat? I'm current on my tetanus shot, and I've had the Hep A and Hep B vaccination series.

(Also, my cat is current on her rabies vaccination, but not on her other shots.)

I'd give your doc a call, just in case. They may want to put you on a course of antibiotics.

What would you do to avoid taking chances? I will ask one of the doctors at work tomorrow, but really, she is a substitute for our usual doctor, and she is AWFUL. Our regular (awesome) doctor won't be back until Monday.

I'm going to call the vet in the morning and ask too--I'm sure they've all been in the same situation at some point, or know someone who has!

What's awful about her? Her bedside manner? If it's something like that, I'd deal with it and just go to her.

Taking no chances to me means assuming feline diseases are potentially communicable to humans. I understand things like Cat Scratch Fever can be quite serious and I'd figure there are other cat to human concerns too (although that's a bacterium/infection that I don't believe is harmful to cats; it's just transmitted by them).

Wear gloves next time or some other protection. I don't know what's out there that could block a needle jab though. Gloves probably won't suffice. Good luck.

I wouldn't worry about it. There's nothing you can catch from cat blood. I would just have squeezed the puncture site a little bit to let it bleed a little and then wash the site with soap and water.

I did this a few times when my cat was diabetic. I'm still here.

It actually never occurred to me that I should be worried. I'll be checking for your update to see whether I was off-base with this or not!

wild~hair--me too! I poked myself many times when I was giving my diabetic cat his insulin shots. He had to have them exactly spaced and sometimes that 5am shot--well I wouldn't have been surprised if I got the wrong cat or even the dog I was just looking for something with fur!

I think you only need to be worried about infection, not so much diseases etc. Just keep the area clean and ask the vet in case.

My vet keeps harping on at me to give me cats some kinda HIV-AIDS shot and somethin else. So they carry alot more than I even knew of.

That's right. Really, humans don't get cat diseases. Since she's had her rabies shot, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
