Default Well, Well, Well, Salem Police Have Warned My Landlord Apparently

I feel SO vinidicated. Here's the response letter from my landlord. Useless, but at least now I feel that the lease is truly broken.

I hear your concerns and it concerns me greatly as this is still an ongoing issue. I've been working with Officer Dennis King from the Salem police department over the sound problems with 21 Harbor. I've attached the letter he sent me which I've also shared with Corey and Shawn. Please feel free to contact Officer King about the noise levels as he may have recommendations for your situation. He suggested to me that everyone in the house could meet and discuss with him in the room, which may be an option if you can't amiably resolve the issue amongst yourselves.

Then he forwarded the letter from the Salem police department where they said that they'd received several noise complaints. They were ALL of them before I moved in. I knew I couldn't be the only one that was bothered by this crap.

Yay! Are you going to try to set up a meeting with Officer King and the bums in the rest of the building?

That's f'd up. Why doesn't the landlord just evict these people. It's not up to you to amiably resolve this "ongoing" issue. He needs to step up and take care of this situation.

Is he some kind of idiot?!?!? He's the one who needs to deal with the noise problem. Not you. Not the police. He needs to evict those tenants if they won't STFU.

The fact that he put the onus back on me right now thrills me. Because now I feel that he's really broken the lease and I have no problem leaving. I will be calling Officer King, though.

Well, that's good, if you are able to get out of there finally! Let the ones that stay behind deal with that crap.

Hugs to you, Springcurl... renting can really suck sometimes. My husband and I owned a condo for 10 years, and are now renting because we had to move to another state. I forgot how ****ty other renters can be, and how awful landlords can be. I can't WAIT to own my own home again.

Have you thought about buying?

Yes, but Spring, why shoud YOU have to go through the stress and expense of moving? The jerks who don't know how to live within the rules of their lease should be moving. (Unless there are other reasons why you wish to move, that I have missed-entirely possible)

Only that this place is now ruined for me and I miss Boston and want to go back.

Incidentally, it's 3:32 a.m. as I type this. They had a huge party downstairs, I was awakened by a fight and a girl screaming that she just wanted to go home. Ten minutes later the fire alarm in the building went off because someone pulled it.

This seems to be beyond a lease agreement (though your landlord is a complete avoidant *******, no doubt about it).

What you are describing happening now is a matter for police -- disturbing the peace, fighting, and who knows what else is going on down there. I hope you are calling them now.

And I'd sure consider getting an attorney.

ETA: I hope you have your landlord's private number and call him each and every time this happens, AS IT IS HAPPENING. See if he likes being awakened at 3 something in the a.m. and if he would like to come and deal with it.

Springcurl, I can't even imagine. I agree with the others that your landlord is a clueless a**. It infuriates me, just hearing what he's putting you through. How soon can you get out of there? I know that finances are a consideration, but this could be absolute misery living there for the next 2 months. Do you know any lawyers? Can you get one to write a threatening letter to your landlord?

On the bolded, yes, I can sure see that, on both parts. What a shame these jerks have ruined this home for you. Is Boston a lot more expensive?

As for last night, were the police called?

Technically I was in Somerville and it's a LOT more expensive. I was paying $1350 for a two bedroom (and it was a steal. GREAT landlords). Here I'm paying $1045.

Having said that, my daughter and her boyfriend want to live with me after they get married and her boyfriend has indicated that he'd be willing to move in with me as soon as I find a new place. He's able to pay $700 a month. So I think by January I can go back to Cambridge, Somerville, Arlington, or Medford. All of those towns are inside the beltway and fine by me. We can get a two or even three bedroom for $1500 and I'd still be paying less than I'm paying here.

I called the police last night at 1:30 but I have no idea if they came. At 3:00 the fire alarm went off. The fire department came but not the police. Then I called the police at 4:30 because they were still it at, quarreling and drinking. I don't know if they came then, either, but I actually think not.

My landlord (the wimp) was here this morning. I saw him as he was leaving and I was coming back from a walk with my dog. I don't know if he was here to talk to them or just to reset the fire alarm or whatever.

I thought of taking a pilgrimage down to the basement to see if i can find the fuse box. Just a thought for what I might possibly do if they have another party tonight.

i wonder if the fire department charges for the false alarms? and i find it very odd that the landlord refuses to evict those two...

Yep I would call the local fire dept, to see if they do charge for false alarms. But this idiot landlord sounds like one of my old ones. Just shut off the alarm system which worked fine til the morons set the place actually on fire. Yeah that was a fun night..

Do call the detective and find out what your options are from the fair housing authority so you can break the lease legally and just the F out!

I also wonder if when you do speak with the officer, what his "take" will be on your landlord basically opting out of resolving things. I wonder what his reply will be regarding legal responsibility: tenant v. landlord.

Other members may know more about this option than I, but I'm guessing you could actually sue him for your moving costs at a minimum, SC. If you want to go that way.
