Do you ever hate asking someone for their recipe?

Do you ever get the impression that sometimes people don't want to share a recipe you've complimented them on?

If I truly love something and I really think I would make the item, I will say "would you mind sharing the recipe?" Of course, people are under no obligation to share; they can always say they misplaced it, etc. (Not everyone uses online recipe sites to store and retrieve their recipes, as I've been told!) I've noticed that some people are funny about sharing certain recipes.

I recently asked someone if she could e-mail me a recipe. She said no she couldn't because she didn't feel like typing it. She said she would mail it to me. After 2 weeks, I e-mailed her to say that I was sorry to bother her again, I think it got lost in the mail, would she please re-send or fax a copy of it to me. She told me she forgot to send it the first time, but was sending it that day. I received it in the mail today. With ingredients missing. The instructions mention the use of the ingredients, but the quantities are not listed. So I e-mailed her again! Because her version of this recipe is awesome! I think it's sort of funny at this point. Yes, I am being a pain in the a$$ about this because I really want her recipe, the way she makes it. Worst case, I will see if there are similars online and I can try to punt on the missing quantities.

Definitely! Some people just don't want to share! There have been many threads in the past on this very subject.

Here's one where I asked a similar question months ago! LOL

Do you share recipes?

LOL! Sorry I missed your thread before. It's a riot reading the different stories people shared.

I am not a good cook. In this case, I think the recipe will be snap compared to the effort it took to get it.

Be sure to post the recipe when you get it. I have to see what makes it so special!

First of all, ditto what roseannadana said..you have to let us know what the recipe is!

I will never understand why people do this. There is nothing I love more than someone asking me for a recipe if they enjoyed something I made. It's such a compliment! This is how recipes get lost over the years and not carried on from generation to generation.

I've decided that I'll never get down to my original weight, and I'm OK with that--After all, 8 pounds 2 oz. is just not realistic.
I'm thinking it's just the quantity of ingredients. You know how people say they ad-lib on measurements? I can't do that and get it to turn out like they did. So while there may be many recipes for noodle casserole out there, I have no way of knowing how truly similar they might be to hers until I know the amounts of the ingredients she used in hers. Just one of my little hangups.

Yes, people can be pretty screwy about sharing recipes. I always find it flattering and am happy to pass along the recipes. I like to note on my recipe cards who gave me the recipe -- often it brings a very pleasant memory and association of the person and the first time I had their food.

My ex MIL was just awful about recipes. She had a few that she had actually gotten from HER MIL and when I asked for them, she wrote them down. Unfortunately, she left out certain ingredients, changed measurements, etc. So then of course the food tasted nothing like hers.

My ex and I waited until she was out of town and then raided her recipe box to copy the recipes he wanted. Maybe that was wrong, but those recipes would have been lost forever if we hadn't done that. We never told her and she was none the wiser. I certainly didn't make any of them for a meal I expected her to attend.

I'd be okay if people just said, "It's an old family recipe and I want to keep it a secret." But to sabotage it so they end up with bad food and wasted ingredients is just selfish and rude.
