Same here. But, I don't have a problem with legal ownership of a weapon. Reality is, legal gun owners are not the ones committing all these gun related crimes. At least not here in Chicago.

It's like the #2 thing they mentioned in Firearms safety class.
I recently did a shooting day (my second) and am going to followup and get the license application. I enjoy target shooting - pistols and rifles the most. And it is relaxing.
For protection, a taser sounds good.

Jesus- you guys all scare me with how normal you find it to have guns and stun guns!!!!
If you have to keep ammo and the gun separate, then surely how much use it will be if someone breaks in is kinda mute at that point?
I don't think I could live in a country where it seems everyone has dangerous weapons on their person :S
I guess living and being raised here, I just don't get the whole its my right to have a gun thing.

My husband has a Glock 22 (.40 cal) as his duty weapon. I've been looking at the Glock 23 for myself when I have some free money in the budget again. His is always loaded and always by his side. I'd probably make him store it in a locking cabinet if we ever decide to have kids. It'd be nice to go to the range on the weekends with my husband to get some target practice in.

Need a gun? Maybe. BUT the caveat is that you never, ever in a million years pull and point unless you mean to use it. To shoot. And mean it. That sounds harsh, but that is safety, and that is why, despite stereotype Americans waving guns around, we usually leave ammunition away from the gun. If you have a loaded gun, and point it, you had better mean it. And there are times where you need to be meaning it.

We'd be better off in the US if we were a bit more squidgy and safe...but the days of the wild frontier are part of our culture, for good or bad.
I have an antique Winchester shotgun that belonged to my grandfather, a target shooter. It's nearly 100 years old. I have fired it, but I'm a lousy shot. (I'm right-handed but left-eyed, and my hands are not very steady.) I would not want to defend my life with it. Fortunately, my neighborhood is quiet and safe, and I am not fearful of bad guys.

Please ----spare us the whole "Oh, we're British and gentle and refined spiel." Your country has committed more violence with colonialism than most of the rest of the world combined.

I plan on getting a permit for one and going to the shooting range.

Who said anything about Britain being 'gentle and refined'?????
I made no argument that one country was more violent than another. I said I find the concept of it being a right to own a gun strange and alien to me.
Im sorry but I do find it scary how many people walking alongside you in various countries are more than likely have a deadly weapon on their person be it gun or stun gun. Im not sure that it makes anyone particularly safer.
But feel free to get all defensive about it- no one else did.

I will, thanks.
Many countries also have laws about concealed weapons, so when you travel and feel concerned about that person beside you who may be "packing," feel free to check the laws in advance.

Yeah, I don't know many people carrying concealed handguns that aren't police...and mostly likely anyone else doing that it isn't carrying a legal gun...
Hell, is it even legal for you to carry concealed firearms in NY? I don't think so.

LOL- hyperbolic much? In the US, your average person on the street isn't "more than likely" carrying around a deadly weapon. The vast majority of us don't even own a weapon deadlier than a butcher's knife, and the overwhelming majority certainly do not carry anything on their person. I'm not denying that we have more than our fair share of gun-nuts in this country, and yes, they freak me out too. But try not to let the loonies and the media, or whatever, convince you that most of us are walking around packing heat in our purse, LOL.

Recently they made it legal to carry a weapon in restaurants and out in public in Georgia and more recently at a park nearby. It's kind of scary.

The scary thing is that it only takes one person owning a gun (the wrong kind of person, of course) to make it necessary for everyone around them to carry guns. and I live in fear of a society like that.
although that said, and im not sure how true it is but I rather liked the sound of it when I was told ;o) the age of chivalry was pretty much thus-called because swords were openly carried. you were polite, or you were rather sturdily pin-cushioned... perhaps a culture of "everyone being armed" could in fact result in a dubious eutopia.
Still a bit risky though, methinks. Im much more pro "burn all weapons" than "legalised firearms for everyone" by a long shot... but at least if aliens ever invaded we'd all have something to fight them off with ;o) you have to consider these little eventualities.

hehe, actually they predominently do. many a time have I had my ankles whacked by a grumpy police-folk with a baton while I was trying to watch the street parade from the comfort of the top of a bus stop ;o)
They might have guns... seems silly for them not to... but we dont really have a gun culture over here. crime yes. violence. hooligans. beatings. bottles. knives. all yes. but for some reason guns are a bit of a rarity. which is something I cant say Im wholly aggreived by. lol
