Ok, So Who Owns A Gun? What Do You Have?
S~ [luvmylocs] said in poodles thread that she got a gun.
I was wondering who owns one?
Would you consider it?
I had the pleasure of shooting this past weekend a 40 Glock [my fave], an M-16 & a shotgun. I haven't shot in years, but now am considering it even more.
Hubby even said he had thought about it. I'm thinking maybe we can do it together, as well.
Thoughts?

I'm a good shot. I used to shoot regularly as a teen with my dad's rifle and handgun at our vacation house out in the boonies. I recently shot at my brother's house (he has a range set up in his basement), and I'm still a good shot. I guess once a dead-eye, always a dead-eye. I have a very steady hand too.
However, I don't own any guns of my own. I just don't think they'll keep me safe and it's not worth the risk to my kids having them in the house.

I'm not sure it's really the best idea to discuss online whether you have one, where it's kept, what kind, etc. But I will say, I don't have a problem w/ (legal) gun ownership as long as the owner KNOWS how to use and maintain it and it is VERY RESPONSIBLY kept away from children and violent criminals.

No, high-pressure water pistol only plus various bows (compound, recurve, longbow, all just as lethal in the wrong hands).
Different laws in the UK to your side of the Big Pond.

Ohhhh, RCW, verah hottt!
How do you set up something like that in one's basement?
Of course, in my neck of the woods we have Carter's Country & places of that nature...
Apparently, I'm a pretty good shot, as well...
The Lt. said so & I've got a nice memento of it hanging up in my garage...

1. Sart with a ginormous mansion
2. Set it up like an enclosed lined alley along the entire length of the house with targets and padding
3. Shoot

I dunno...a couple hundred feet? I don't think you could shoot a rifle down there, but we used small handguns. It's a seriously big house. I could fit my entire house in the basement.

No guns for me. I did some target shooting once when I was a kid in Montana. I shot a gopher. I still bear a psychic scar from that!

I've never shot an animal, but I think I would be OK with it if it was for food. I'm not sure I would eat gopher stew unless I was really hungry.

I still kinda blame that gopher for getting shot. He (She?) was pretty stupid to pop up and stay still while I was shooting....

i have a 9 mm taurus. i don't like the idea that people are getting so bold that they will break in on you while you're at home. i'm less worried about someone taking something as i am them raping or killing/torturing me. when my neighbors house was broken into my friend who is a police officer and my lawn guy (both of whom i trust) said i should get one for my personal safety. unfortunately we live in a world where you might have to decide between your life and the bad guys.
i'd already taken a gun class at one of the local shooting ranges a couple of years ago. the class was taught by a police officer who trains police officers so we discussed safety and a multitude of situations in the class and we practiced shooting. i've dated a couple of guys that had guns and we went to the shooting range before so it wasn't foreign to me at all. personally i think i need to go to the shooting range monthly to practice and feel comfortable that i could easily use my gun if i had to.
i respect and understand anyones decision to have or not have a gun in the home. i certainly hope i never have to use it on a person.

I think guns are OK as long as you have one legally and that it is stowed away from children. I think guns are OK as long as the animals you kill with it are eaten.
With that said, I would LOVE to have a gun! More for protection than anything else. After Virginia Tech, my carefree days as a college student were over. If people like THAT have guns, I sure as hell want one to protect myself against them! And on my campus, there was a rape (maybe killing?) just last week!!!!
I've never shot a gun or anything...and perhaps I'd be OK with a taser, but I do want SOME kind of protection.

I have one. I got it after there was a murder rather nearby.
However, and this is embarrassing, although I bought it legally, I have no idea how to load it. I keep it separate from the ammunition I bought, just in case.
I never want to use it, but I will if I have to.

Not I. I've only been shooting twice, and that was at a clay pigeon range. I did pretty well, I wouldn't mind going to a range to shoot real guns. The only way I'd allow one in my home is if my husband decided to take up hunting as a regular hobby, and that probably won't happen.

you should practice. i find that actually loading the thing is harder than anything...pushing those bullets in hurts my fingers
right now i rely on my dogs to bark like crazy if they hear anything and my alarm system to go off if glass is broken or if a door opens. i also sleep with my bedroom door closed and locked from the inside. if i had to (because someone was in my house) i could hop out of bed and get it with a quickness while i waited on the intruder. my police officer friend suggested i keep it on the nightstand at night. i didn't want to do that but honestly if something else bold happens near me i probably would. the way i see it, if someone still comes in after dogs are barking and an alarm is going off they are not there to sell girl scout cookies. they probably will hurt or kill me....so better to be safe than sorry but like i said, hope i never have to use it.

I know you're right, lml. But, for good or ill, one of the benefits of owning the breed of dog I do is that few people are willing to try to get in.
